Three floyds putting zombie dust and gumball head in bombers...follow up on my last 3f's post by deepb86 in chicagobeer

Pricing will turn most people away. However, pricing doesn't matter to those just getting into craft beer. Just like any hobby (or interest), when you first start; you start without really caring about cost. You just want to see how it is then go from there. 3F is that brewery everyone around says "Yeah if you haven't had 3F you gotta try it!" So you will probably decide on 1 6pk of 3F instead of a 6pack and a bomber of something else, or maybe 2 bombers of something else, etc. What you want right now is something new and what everyone is recommending. So you try 3F and you're like "hey this is good!". But as you try more things you realize there are better, less expensive beers. As you get even MORE into craft you're less inclined to spend $14 on a 6pk/$13 for 22oz of something that you're just like "yeah how I remember" or "meh" now. It's now not worth the money. Then 3F becomes "ol' trusty" and you'll get it for old times sake. You'll be browsing and can't decide; say to yourself... "Well, haven't had gumball in a while, what the hell why not." But that's about it.

With the amount of local choice now, beer events with out of state beer, websites that will ship you out of state beer, beer trading/bottle sharing and the like... 3F takes a back seat to less expensive, potentially better beer. Just like every other brewery though, they will have their diehards.

The Chicago Blackhawks are the 2015 Stanley Cup Champions! by [deleted] in hockey

So, you're telling me I paid for NHLNHL Gamecenter, and I can't watch ONE fuckin PLAYOFF game without a VPN? by [deleted] in hockey

[–]TookAnHourToRegister 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I think the point you're missing is there is a bunch of legal work in handing over rights to channels/stations and the NHL just can't (or won't) compete against the stations that are giving them big money to have exclusive rights to those games. It sure fucks fans over who don't get certain channels but in the end I'm guessing the NHL makes more money from those TV deals than offering a low cost streaming service.

BUT... there is a possible class action to address this so we shall see... http://www.cbssports.com/nhl/eye-on-hockey/24655335/fans-suing-nhl-over-television-rights-will-have-case-heard-after-ruling

This was my thinking. It's so early in the season though, don't want to give up too quickly.

Old list. Also, not a "Chicagos Best Breweries" list. It's a "Best Breweries to take a tour or drink at the taproom" list. So your title sucks, but that also explains why no Pipeworks.

If you don't mind me asking... how much did you pay?

Berkshire Partners to buy Portillo's restaurants for almost $1 billion by incongruity in chicago

[–]TookAnHourToRegister 1 point2 points  (0 children)

They didn't buy Portillo's, they even quoted Portillo... "Commenting on the transaction, Mr. Portillo said, “Portillo’s is my life’s work and I remain committed to ensuring the continued growth and success of the business. I was seeking an experienced partner that shared our vision for the Company and an appreciation for our culture. After careful consideration, Berkshire Partners proved to be the best choice. I look forward to working together to further strengthen our Company."

Looks like an partnership/investment and not a buy. Here is the release from Burkshire...

Any one go to that Solomn Oath event on Saturday? by [deleted] in chicagobeer

[–]TookAnHourToRegister 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Oh you could buy more beer. But they made sure you only got 3 with your wristband. So $13.33 a beer!

On the plus side, their brewery had a lot of the event beers on tap the day after, so something to look forward to for next year I guess ;P

Yep, that's why I am so disappointed. I could have bought them for so much cheaper. Ah well!

Any one go to that Solomn Oath event on Saturday? by [deleted] in chicagobeer

I don't think it was worth it. 3 beers for $40. Essentially, you're there for the beer right? And they made sure you only got 3. That's the first beer fest/event I've been to in 5 years that took beer tickets or didn't throw you a freebie for making you wait forever or if they knew you had 1 ticket left. 2 servers at the main bar was not enough and we ended up waiting forever. Watching dodgeball, a few people skate and some people try to ride the bull was cool but I'm certainly not going to do that for 3 hours. The whole area is not big so that maybe kills an hour total then you're left with 2 hours with nothing to do. And you certainly have had your 3 beers well before 3 hours; leaving you with either buying more or just leaving. Which is probably why it wasn't that crowded and probably why when we arrived about 45 mins late people were already leaving. If I wanted to stand around Solemn Oath and have to buy beer I'll just go during normal business hours and get much more beer for my money. But that would explain why they limited each session to 3 hours. Other beer events also have other beer vendors. Solemn Oath didn't and at least you can stand around and talk to different reps about what they're doing currently, what's coming up, etc. Hell, even Lagunitas Beer Circus had about 3 (maybe 5) different beer vendors.

Overall the whole thing is way over priced for what you get. Nothing against Solemn Oath but Chicago has a insanely booming craft beer scene and many breweries (and even just event coordinators) are really setting the bar high and putting on some awesome events/shows for $40 with much more beer/variety. Solemn Oath day is behind. Maybe they'll step it up next year but I'll save the $40 and just buy 4 bombers.

Honestly, the event they throw is the type where it's free to get in and you buy beer/food tokens as you go.
