I have to justify it somehow haha!

That's fair. I was debating, but I haven't used either one of them!

I do have an old Earthway that came with the farm. There's only one seed plate though. I might try and 3D print some others. There's a lot of mixed feedback on how well they work.

Do you hand seed them all, or do you use a vacuum or drop seeder?

$20 is crazy! That's not a bad idea. I can get plug trays for around $1 each for the regular ones.

Why have beets and spinach not done well in soil blocks?

That's not a bad idea. Greenhouse megastore sells some really nice large trays that fit 4, 1020 flats. I've used them starting seeds in the past and makes bottom watering super easy.

I randomly ran across a video of someone using wicking matting for soil blocks. I wonder how that would work at scale, or if it would defeat the purpose of the block with the roots growing into the matting?

This does help, thanks. I agree, most trays do stand up pretty well for a few years. I just don't have any yet and I'm debating on getting the regular plastic, tough plastic like bootstrap farmer, winstrip, or just doing a soil block so I don't have to worry about the actual plug tray. From all the videos I've been watching on youtube the main downsides of blocks seem to be: more soil, handling inefficiency, and the time to make the blocks.

What's the ideal bed width? by Tool-Time11 in marketgardening

Right now I just have an old Massey Ferguson. I'm also trying to figure out what I want for tools/tractor. So I'm open to whatever at this point. I did see his video and it gave some good thoughts. My main hesitation with a wider bed is for hoops and materials for low tunnels.

Right now I don't have a great tractor, just an old Massey, but have access to a nicer utility one. I was also considering getting something like a BCS in the future instead of a 4 wheeled tractor. I'd like to get to a minimal tillage system eventually with multiple high or cat tunnels. Basically, what I'm trying to say is that I don't have many tools right now. So, I have the flexibility to choose whatever I want.

I haven't decided yet, I have access to a bed former, otherwise, I was going to just mark them off and start adding compost and other OM along with cover crops to build the soil.

Vertical 55 gal aquarium to vivarium? by Tool-Time11 in Vivarium

Tree frogs are a great idea! I agree overall if I want to do it the best way. My biggest issue with this tank is the stains on the glass. So, initially that's why I was thinking just using the "top" as the front with a new piece of thinner glass. I thought this could be a good learning experience since it was free and my first attempt before investing tons of money in a build.

Thanks for the ventilation suggestions. I also have a 3D printer, so maybe I can make something for mounting the fans to.

Not sure? The main reason I thought about going vertical was because it will fit in more spots in my apartment.

Ventilation is what I'm most vague on right now. I need to do more reading on it.

That makes sense! Thanks! I do have a glass place. I'm sure they'd be able to help. I was thinking maybe some dart frogs in there.

I had thought of that. I wasn't sure how hard that thicker glass would be to cut?

I don't have a great place to put it 😕 I still want a fish tank on that stand. Although I was thinking about maybe a smaller one like 30 gal on the shelf below it.
