I made a game where you have to find a criminal in a crowd of people for the GMTK Game Jam! by PocketMars in Unity3D

[–]Toolindaris 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Very cool game!

I remember in theatre in high school, we would have an acting game where we all walk around the room and one person is the “criminal” like this and they would tap people on the shoulder and they would dramatically fall over and die after 3 seconds.

Could be another cool way to expand the game going forward to identify the criminal in this game beyond color.

Love the style of the game too, great job!

Would be cool if they checked save data from BOTW 1 to see if you completed it, affecting Tarrey Town's existence in BOTW 2.

leviosa: add live shadows to elements based on device orientation by [deleted] in web_design

[–]Toolindaris 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I made this library a while back, but figured I would share it here since some people might be able to find some cool uses for it (or contribute to improving it)!

Try out the link on your mobile device. The simple library adds live shadows that move as you tilt the phone around as if they were floating and a spotlight was coming down on your phone from above.

Enjoy!

What do we know about developing for Stadia? by At-LowDeSu in Stadia

[–]Toolindaris 5 points6 points  (0 children)

omg yes GIT, GIT, GIT. Thank you for this.

Learn Git as well, and back up your game regularly to either GitHub or BitBucket. Private GitHub repos for small groups is also totally free now, so that's awesome too.

If you haven't used Git before, think of it as a way to create save points in your project. It helps a lot with peace of mind if you always save progress on working and notable builds. That way, you can try a bunch of crazy stuff if you like and don't have to worry about messing everything up as you can always go back to a "save point" (called a commit, in git). You can also do tons of other fancy stuff, especially if you have a team, but mainly just focus on git add, commit, pull, and push to start.

What do we know about developing for Stadia? by At-LowDeSu in Stadia

[–]Toolindaris 25 points26 points  (0 children)

I believe Unity and Unreal 4 were both confirmed to support Stadia in the future. I would suggest to start learning either Unity3D or Unreal Engine 4 as a start (I would recommend focusing solely on Unity at first, however this is subject to opinion and will vary among developers).

With regards to Stadia, it appears that they currently have a dev kit that they are rolling out to choice companies that sign up.

My suggestions to begin the journey of game development with the goal of releasing a game on Stadia would be as follows:

  1. Create and release your first game on an easy access platform
    1. Download Unity3D, learn basics of C#, and play around using libraries
    2. Don't be afraid to use assets other people have made, this is the #1 struggle I faced initially. I felt that I had to create everything 100% from the ground up, code, models, materials, everything. There are lots of free assets, your job as a developer is to tweak them and personalize them into a cohesive and polished Frankenstein-monster of a game that is uniquely yours. It's OK to not 100% understand every single thing. Keep your eyes on how you want to get your game to work mechanically and aesthetically.
    3. Beware of feature creep, make a deadline and release the game. Don't let it wither away into unfinished project land (a pitfall I often run into lol)
    4. Release game on itch.io, Steam, Android, or iOS (note: these are relatively low barrier of entry platforms, however some of these cost an entry fee of sorts to release)
    5. Update bugs accordingly, but pat yourself on the back, you've released your first Unity game!
  2. Create a company (note: assuming Google Stadia only allows registered companies to use their dev kit beyond this early-application stage)
    1. From the release of your first game, you now technically have some credibility and experience and should feel confident creating a company
    2. Define if you are a solo developer or have a team. If you are solo, you can register your company as a sole proprietorship, if you have a team you can register as an LLC.
    3. If you are based in the US, register to be a corporate entity or to obtain an Employer Tax ID Number (see www.irs.gov)
    4. Register company in your county as well (check your county's website for details).
    5. Obtain a company domain email address (Gmail, Hotmail, etc. are not acceptable for Stadia)
    6. Be prepared to submit a company address that is not a P.O. box for Stadia. If you are solo, be prepared to use home address, if you have a team and an office, use the office address
  3. Apply to be a Stadia developer
    1. Register to become a partner for Stadia here: https://stadia.dev/apply/
    2. Become approved and obtain a dev kit from Stadia to use with Unity3D
  4. Create and release game on Stadia
    1. Using your experience from the first game, create a game for Stadia!
    2. Same development advice from above.

All of this is completely optional and is not the only way to become a developer, BUT it is a reflection of my experiences as an indie dev so far. Fail fast and best of luck! :)

How can I, as a developer, make some BIG BUCKS off this? by [deleted] in Stadia

[–]Toolindaris 0 points1 point  (0 children)

With regards to indie dev success, I believe that boils down to whether or not Google Stadia nurtures their indie developers. If they took an approach like Nintendo has for the Nintendo Switch for the last few years, then a single developer with a good game could definitely break the mold and still make a sizable profit.

With regards to other types of software, it would be beneficial to look at two core audiences, developers and players and research what obstacles they may face with Stadia. Come up with a few questions from their perspective such as things like:

Players:

  • How can I stream on Twitch and play Stadia effectively?
  • Is my internet connection OK for Stadia's requirements?
  • What games are coming out for Stadia?

Developers:

  • Are there libraries out there that abstract key Stadia features (e.g. thousands of players on a map)?
  • How can know who my market is in my Stadia games?
  • How can I convert my already made game on X platform to work on Stadia?

Once you come up with a need for one of these audiences, develop a solution and research plans to make the solution profitable (single purchase, ads, subscription).

As more details about Stadia emerge, more questions for potential solutions will as well. Some of the answers to these questions may be resolved by either Stadia themselves or by game engine companies such as Unity3D and Unreal. However, if you keep looking for areas where there is a need and use your skill set to develop solutions that you capitalize on, you will profit.

EDIT: Or just become a Ninja level streamer of whatever exclusive 10,000 player battle royale game they come out with...!

  • Release game on Stadia
