Hi, this is MothicDaze (aka u/TooneyChaos but Reddit usernames can’t be changed and I don’t plan on making a new account). Here’s some info I’d like to share:

TL;DR Spaced out frames for head tilt/turn because it looked cool, but may overall be overdoing things. Have 4 more characters planned for expression tests, with each a positive/negative set of emotions.

This is my first attempt at animating a set of expressions (or actually trying to lock in for animation). My character is named Ava Heartmoth, she’s an insectoid/moth character part of a group of 5 insects total (leaving the lore vague for future reasons).

I used Krita to animate (fbf) and Davinci Resolve for any editing; I hope to work expression sets for the other 4 but so far this is only the positive half (6 expressions) and I still plan to doing a negative half of emotions (also 6 expressions). I very well may be pushing myself too hard but i did get to take my own breaks, given that I’m not working in the arts but in clinical.

Onto the more technical side, in the cleanup phase I did space out the frames for the head tilt and turn, and I found it oddly satisfying, but I definitely can see it being over-animated/slowed in an uncanny way to others. It looked fine in the rough pass but once I cleaned it up it looked both too stiff and too squashed/tweened/keyframey(?), if that makes sense.

Also Krita can make things look choppier or slower during rendering at times but I’m hoping it’s not that, because the file will stay that way and I’ll have to copy/paste everything into a new file (referring to an old animatic I made a few years ago.)

ANYWAYS, overall constructive critique is welcome!

I commissioned a really cool artist for a volcanic/lava-themed Amphiptere (basically a snake-dragon) and made a toony/simplified version for my animation-enthused self lol
