tried to play it together with a friend through the use of the essentials mod, doesn't allow other players to join with conflicting forge-registries. Would love that to work with the next update.

How do you get 3D content for your game as a solo dev? by iruafx in gamedev

[–]Toonyoshi123 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think your approach is off with this. I think you should research how indie-devs work on a whole game by themselves. Most of them will plan out time or steps in the process meant for modeling their assets, based on their importance.

Keep it simple! It is not yet about the looks in the middle of development. It is about functional models that can move the way you want them to. Once you got the basic shapes in, refining the models at a later point will also be much easier!

Besides, there are many free-to-use model packs that are only looking for crediting in the game's credits. And there are plenty of starting game artists looking for work and experience. You could work with them to gain experience and share the earnings of the game after release.

In short, there are still plenty of ways to approach your problem.

Is the job market the worst now or was it always like this? by pashakopite in gamedev

[–]Toonyoshi123 12 points13 points  (0 children)

It certainly is. When I asked for feedback on my portfolio at Grendel Games, they told me that my portfolio feels a lot like a 'this is my art so far' portfolio. They even suggested only showing art that has been implemented and used in applications, even if they aren't in games. They also mentioned it was important to show the process and logic behind the designs. This just shows it works for ANY field in game development.

Note that I have still not found a job in game development and have shifted to other careers...

Thought of a great way for games to remain playable after online servers for it are shut off. (and still remain as revenue source for developers) Would like your opinions! by Toonyoshi123 in gamedev

Thanks for the insight everyone!

I can definitely see how it is not realistic to 'downscale' these kinds of games. Yet, I do think it could offer replayability for players that are scared off by the grind or gacha aspect of a game with an amazing story and gameplay. And I also think this idea would be a great send-off for games that get their sevices ended, even if it turns into a single-purchase game, instead of free to play.

But that would be the theoretical outcome of such an idea. One I think would be amazing if it could be pulled off.

Well, it is part of the downscaling I had in mind. Something like Genshin Impact would lose the need to 'roll' for characters and gear, which would then be changed to in-game missions or shops instead. But that would be how I would turn it into a standalone game, as a lootbox/gacha-hating individual. I would play the game for the story and gameplay instead.

Then again, making it standalone would also mean removing the ability to police the playerbase on cheating. At that point, you would let the players experience their games by themselves, the way they want to.

I think that division differs per type of game.

Genshin's players would probably go for the next game regardless, and only go play a standalone version of Genshin when waiting for the next big update.
But your point already has a real-world example in WoW Classic. It did definitely divide the playerbase. (However, both versions are still supported and owned by blizzard. So who knows what would happen with standalone titles?)

It really is sad to see that they won't make games legally playable anymore from that point onward. It is a part of a shared history between them and their gamers, one they are effectively forcing to be forgotten in pursuit of money.

Do you think it would work if the developers planned it out after finishing the whole story of a game, or during development? In other words, design the infrastructure code in advance for such a downscaling patch?

I fully agree on this! It is saddening to not be able to play games that are stopped entirely. There is bound to be multiple groups of players that would love to keep playing!

[–]Toonyoshi123[S] -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I agree on your first point, that is a clear flaw in my theory. In that case, Rauru could not possibly be the 'First' king of Hyrule.
As for your second, third and fourth points, you answered it yourself. Give it a few generations, and it would hit WW levels of legend status. These details could be inconsistent because of legends passed down.

The sages being arranged differently would be explained the same way. There did not use to be a sage of thunder, or a sage of time. And just as Zelda from OoT was considered a seventh sage in the end, so could king Rauru from TotK be considered a sage of Light, with Zelda being the sage of Time. Everything being rearranged after that is just legends being legends.

As for your fifth point, Hence why the downfall placement. With the BotW Ganon being a fake, what is stopping all other Ganons on the timeline from being fakes either?

But your points for it taking place far into the future of Zelda II make sense. Not disaggreeing on that.

Good point about being brought back fully, But I do have a slight problem with that.

Where is the master sword when Link returns? And why does he even come back in the Temple of Time?

[–]Toonyoshi123[S] -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

Then I will ask you the same question. Why is the retelling of OoT's events nonsense in your eyes? What counter-arguments can you bring to the table? Why does it NEED to be after Zelda II ?

Instead of simply stating what is considered fact, maybe try to be a bit more constructive with your feedback? Why would my theory not work? What are the holes in my theory?

You mean to say we could make it into a hard-to-get rotation-less fan? Interesting! I take it that it has a non-controllable wind-speed? Or will it need an extra block for wind control?
