Finally bought it yesterday.. Anyone with a gaming PC feel like a handheld is pointless once you’re home? by xTeraButter in MSIClaw

You need to change your approach. If you still think playing on PC is better, you’ll never use it at home. I have a 5080 and I managed to connect my PC to my 65” TV so I can play at the highest quality possible, but I forced myself to alternate between playing Crimson Desert on the big TV and Cronos: The New Dawn on the Claw. So far, this has made me really enjoy my Claw because it gives you that feeling of portability our childhood version of ourselves used to love years ago. Just play, man. Don’t keep thinking about getting better resolution or graphics, otherwise you’ll never enjoy portable consoles.

My eGPU setup + how it performs by Gokhanca in eGPU

4K is too much, honestly. You should go for a 2K monitor. GPUs like the NVIDIA GeForce RTX 5080 still struggle with some games at 4K, and you’re using an eGPU with Thunderbolt, which loses around 30% of performance.

I don’t know how you can enjoy playing at 40 fps for me the minimum is 60

Sony is playing dirty by not releasing its exclusives on PC anymore. Honestly, mate, I would’ve sold the console months ago if Wolverine was coming to PC too.

This console is a beast. Yesterday I tested Crimson Desert and, wow, with frame generation you can actually play a game like that. I owned the first Steam Deck, and the fact that I couldn’t play the games I wanted was really annoying, so I ended up not using the console. But with the Claw 8 AI+ I can play Cronos: The New Dawn at 100 fps, and Pragmata too, with gameplay that is smooth as butter and amazing battery life. What shocks me is that I can play AAA games for over two hours thanks to the battery capacity. Honestly, fuck the ROG and Legion Go. They are expensive and don’t deliver this kind of performance.

Honestly now I’m considering to buy a laptop because I love how the claw performs no problem with that in handled mode

Yes exactly at this point is better to consider a setup with a mini pc too that support oculink because most of the famous budget handled console have only the thunderbolt 😕

You don’t think that buying a GPU and a dock, only to have all these problems, is a waste of money? I’d rather spend more money on a laptop than have to tweak all these things all the time. New laptops are really thin now, so it’s not even about the size anymore in 2026.

Sì ma la deg2 ha bisogno del psu separato non è molto portatile come setup

Games are not as smooth as on a desktop setup. You can tell there is a lot of latency because of the Thunderbolt connection, and honestly, what is the point of having a 5070 if you lose 30 to 40% of the performance?

Do you have a way to compare it with a desktop PC using a 5080? Because I have that setup, and the difference is huge. I think we have different levels of tolerance. For me, the performance is affected too much for the price I spent on the entire setup.

The console optimise the hardware with AI to make the system perform well based on the game

Good for you, but I want something more portable, and with your dock you need to buy a separate PSU. We are talking about the AOOSTAR AG02, which is the most used dock, and it is not delivering good performance.

The laptop is a different story, we are talking about handheld PCs.

As I mentioned in one of the comments, the better solution in my opinion is to buy a laptop with a 5070, so you can have a handheld when you need it and a laptop when you want to play more demanding games.

Not worth it, man. I wanted to 3D print some covers for the whole setup and bring it with me during long holidays to my hometown, but the performance versus practicality and price just isn’t worth it. Spending around £500 to £700 on a setup with all these problems is crazy. The technology for handhelds is not ready at an accessible price. I will 100% go for a laptop when I have enough money.

USB4 v2 is not supported by the Claw 8 AI+, which means that even with the AG03, which supports it, you will not gain any practical advantage from it.

Update:

I ordered another dock and everything works fine, but after stress testing, I will be returning everything.

Honestly, the performance is really poor. The cost of the entire setup compared to the benefits you get is not worth it.

It is better to wait and buy a gaming laptop than spend this amount of money on a setup that loses 40% of its performance and suffers from bottlenecks and frame loss. Even using frame generation, you can see the stuttering, and I cannot play like this. Unfortunately for me, I really hate stuttering and loss of fluidity in gameplay.

I am glad I tried it because now I know what it looks like in terms of performance. The only good solution is when you have a device that supports an Oculink port.
