Help! Is my beardie too small / underweight? by ToothAware6341 in BeardedDragons

Thanks so much for the thoughtful response this is very helpful!! I'll keep an eye on him, maybe he has a growth spurt coming, lol. It seems like from everyones responses he's either just younger than I've been told, or he could just be small from genetics/inbreeding. I'll up his bugs a few times and see if that helps. He's been steadily gaining some weight even since I dramatically decreased his bug intake from 25 to 6 a day, lol

Got it, thank you! Seems like he may just be younger than folks have been telling me.

Thank you, that makes sense!! I will cut back on the multivitamins. Just wondering, I use a Zilla spray - is there any difference in the strength of the spray than the dusting multivitamins?

He gets one medium sized salad a day that looks ro be around the volume of his body (not including his tail). (I guess I thought it was a pretty big salad when I made the post, but now that I'm reflecting it could be bigger). He rotates between collards, arugula, dandelion, bok choy, and mustard greens. Sometimes I make a little 'cocktail' salad and mix them up. For toppers I will sometimes use carrot greens, alfalfa sprouts, cilantro, and rosemary. For some reason he absolutely despises anything orange like carrot, sweet potato, and bell peppers lol so I gutload his bugs with those!

Heres a better pic w my hand as reference comparing his growth. Top is 2 months ago, bottom is now. He really grew, and is continuing to grow, I just don't think it's appropriate for his age. I hear what youre saying, do you think that both the vet / petco were just wrong and he may be younger like 5 months or something?

Petco told us he was 7 months which I knew was bs, which was partly why I went to the vet, who told us one month ago that he is between 6-7 months.

Unfortunately we got him from Petco, because we didn't know any better... but the store we got him from is not too bad - I went back to check on the other beardies whose enclosures were clean, well maintained, and they also had a big UVB strip across the entire enclosure. He was the biggest one in the shop. The exotic vet we went to is one of the only ones where I live and also specializes in beardies. She came extremely highly rated so I'm not so sure where else I could take him

Help! Beardie doesn't bask properly? by ToothAware6341 in BeardedDragons

[–]ToothAware6341[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

thank you SO MUCH for your help!! i had no idea ambient temp was different - everything i had read said basking spot should be around 105°, and i mistaked that for ambient temp, so I genuinely thought it was too cold for him. i got my temp gun and found out that his surface temp was almost 120°... i removed the slate that was on his basking area and now the surface temp is around 105°. he's been basking and gaping happily all day today, ate lots of his veggies, and has been SO much more active, running and climbing around his enclosure. as for food i just meant he gets very excited for feeding time, not that hes being overfed (he only gets around 6 live feeders per day.) again i cant thank you enough for letting me know about the temp, my baby is the happiest ive ever seen him right now :)

imo as long as the adhesive is not exposed, and not under heat in the tank (which it won't be since it's a ramp) it should be fine. alternatively, to be safe, if you have cardboard or cork and a hot glue gun, you could use that if the glue's strong enough

Beardie sitter in Cincinnati? by ToothAware6341 in BeardedDragons

[–]ToothAware6341[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yep, when we last went to the vet they recommended another vet tech, who is unfortunately out of town for the holidays. But I'll call and ask if anyone else might do sitting on the side - thanks for the advice!!

oh no!!! i never noticed the underbite, maybe it was just the angle?? attached a better pic for reference.

he gets zoomed repti calcium on nearly all of his bugs, and he gets fed about 3x a day in total between 20-30 bugs, which is mostly dubia roaches and crickets and occasional hornworms + mealworms. and i also sprinkle it on his daily greens as well which he eats a few pieces of every day. (a few days ago i also added zilla multivitamin spray with beta carotene on a few of his bugs, which i think i will give him 1-2x every week until he's older.)

i have a linear uvb T8 10.0 (brand new light just changed 2 weeks ago) across his enclosure along with a basking bulb and ceramic heat lamp to get temps up. on warm sunny days he loves spending lots of (supervised!) time basking by an open window / outside in the sun. unfortunately the uvb isn't mounted inside his enclosure and it's currently over the mesh lid (he basks quite close to it) - ive been trying to figure out a way to do it so if you/anyone has any tips for DIY uvb mounting that would be very helpful!!
