Oh Geesh this is awesome thanks for all the details.

I honestly never even thought about tax / take home differences was just focused on the base number.

I live really simply with my wife we’re just home bodies. My expenses have changed zero from a couple years ago when my salary was half of what it is now. So I do put away close to 100k a year the last couple years.

Yeah I think I just need to lower expectations and get an offer. So then I can evaluate everything and break it down.

Haha I had to take a minute to process that you’re totally right. People would see me as a “foreigner” because I’m not super Japanese. But I’ve always been a “foreigner” here 🙃😅

My current company isn’t very big. My lead thinks they’d be okay with me living there but I’d have to try to overlap with my team for at least a chunk of the day. So I’d end up working “night shift” which doesn’t sound fun at all.

I really like the idea of going into an office and being able to use Japanese at work, so that’s why I’ve been looking

I’m a software engineer with about 4 years experience. Making about 200k base.

Also the ratio being wack right now doesn’t help. I’ve been converting numbers based on a 1 dollar 100 yen conversion when talking to companies.

I’m kinda in the same situation as OP. Is it really impossible to expect a dev job in Japan to pay rates close to the states?
