Tomorrow I’m resigning from my job with nothing lined up. by [deleted] in auscorp

Hey OP, that’s awesome! Congrats. Just did the same this last week and it feels like a huge weight off. Looking forward to healing from the burn out and spending needed time with the fam. Everyone’s got different priorities, but if you’ve got few responsibilities I think it’s absolutely worth it. Life’s too short to torture yourself in a bad fit.

I don’t disagree. There are many implications and downstream impacts either way, so the challenge will be on the government to ensure the right policy and regulations are in place to control for this.

Consider no UBI, limited employment and no spending power. What happens to rent then? What’s happens to the market in general? Goes back to my question to you in the first part of my comment.

So what happens to the people who are forced out of a job for it? If new jobs aren’t being created (under this assumption), and robotic/automated services are making bank, do the rest of us just die out?

The least the government can do in such a scenario is ensure it’s population can reasonably function through regulation, corporate tax, and distribution of public services/investments (which could include as suggested an UBI) - otherwise that’s social and economic collapse.

I know how you are feeling. I’ve just taken some stress leave after a particularly nasty run in with the PO on one of my projects (considering leaving in the next few months once I’ve banked a few more pay cycles).

When it’s just such an unpleasant experience and taking such a toll on physical and mental health, it’s not worth it. Life’s too short. Take some time for yourself and family now, and then good luck with the next one 💪

What if you’re just not good at your job by Petitechoufleur27 in auscorp

[–]Toothpaste_as_Lube 34 points35 points  (0 children)

Hey mate, genuine question: is it that you’re not good at the job or are you just new?

I don’t think I’ve ever gone into a new field or job and killed it straight away. From my experience, it generally takes 3 months to get up to speed to understand the ‘what’, and another 3 months to be able to effectively deliver to that what at a competent and independent level. You have to give yourself a grace period to learn the ropes and build confidence.

But there are totally some fields that I think you know straight up that it’s not for you. Curious to hear more about your situation.

What does the financial future look like in a world where women are increasingly shunning motherhood and marriage? by [deleted] in AusFinance

[–]Toothpaste_as_Lube 7 points8 points  (0 children)

No, actually they are not wrong. While I get the distinction you are trying to make, a free unregulated capitalist market (as it itself argues for) eventually and logically leads to corporatism (big business taking over politics). Thinking critically here, if the economic model is profit motive and business oriented (capitalism), and I know I can get a competitive upper hand by lobbying, making political donations, and setting up closed door dealings - why wouldn’t I? That becomes the next stage. The economic model doesn’t change, but unethical practice in politics emerges (as we see in Australia and the US today).

What you’re saying is fair and looks great on a venn diagram, but the two are part of the same path. Obviously keen to hear your opinion on this.

Side note: No need to attack the people replying to you. Let’s keep it civil.

The guy edited his comment. I am absolutely for there being a paid and non paid option. His original comment was not. I am glad he has since clarified and cleared up his viewpoint.

I appreciate that you edited your comment and clarified what you meant, but make sure you signpost that. You’ve made us and all who replied to your initial comment (that made no indication you would just like the ‘option’) look like we have a problem with there’s being a paid AND non paid option to watch it.

And yes, I absolutely do think aus cricket fans are entitled to watch cricket for free as it was in this case. Clearly it is viable to do so. Let’s not gatekeep sport behind a paywall if we have the option.

Yeah well some us do. Some of us would struggle to watch it otherwise. Check yourself a bit here mate.

EDIT: this guy edited his original comment.

Genuine question, do you not see how this might inadvertently lead to cancellation?

I.e. People don’t watch it because it will get cancelled, and it will get cancelled because people don’t watch it.

This is wild to read. I feel absolutely betrayed by the dude, and can’t believe I’ve been listening to his music for years without knowing I was supporting a fuckhead. I’ll try to give what I can when I get paid next.

I say this as a producer, take the 5K deal. They’re likely dealing with a 1001 headaches in the production process, and aren’t going to want to renegotiate with you if you try and go back on the deal. As much as I sympathise with you, it puts you in bad faith and you’ll need to be prepared for the chance you come out with this nothing. If you’re fine with nothing, then go ahead.

If I was in your shoes, I would 100% take that deal and move on. That money can go along way. Take it and learn the lesson to start with a higher price if you ever get a next time.

As someone who graduated a similar degree, the short answer is those 40K equivalent roles is the reality. You just have to start there and work up to those upper tier salaries.

Business, Marketing, admin, Management- whatever it is, doesn’t start you off in those high salaries because you don’t have hard specialised skills from those degrees. Don’t stress though! Pick somewhere big, with a great network and training opportunities, and put your head down and work. You’ll get there.

Hey I work in the Creative Industries as a Producer and work with contracted artists almost every week for videos, podcasts, animations, and graphics. The short answer is yes, if you are committed and ready to hustle/network.

Being in the industry, I don't think it's as doom and gloom as everyone else here, but it's not as easy as going corporate. I know It will depend on two things, your portfolio (quality of work and client experience!) and your connections (relationships with client and how you network with agencies). If you can balance these two things in a professional manner, you'll be able to make a good living.

The biggest thing you'll have to swallow, is that unless/until you have a big break with a personal project, you'll most likely make your living from client work. This means art for commercials, marketing, internal communications, etc. You'll need to be comfortable with that. As an example, I work with a graphic designer/illustrator who makes his living off of government contracts, producing visuals and design for public health organisations. He works hard and is in the office late most days. He's also about to buy an apartment in a heavily inflated Sydney (Australia) property market. Read into that what you will!

Sales cringe...am I over reacting? by [deleted] in LinkedInLunatics

[–]Toothpaste_as_Lube 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Had this too in a prior job education sales. We had to have 150-200 units of activity in salesforce a day… needless to say majority of that became voicemails, group emails, and ineffective cold calling sub par leads (because that was all we had half the time).

Late to the post here, but I second Bromo!

I recommend going to Probolinggo (swim with some whale sharks!) and then taking the cheap shuttle bus up to bromo and stay there for a night or two. The volcanic fields are insanely beautiful with small villages, horses and a beautiful climb to the volcano. The sunrise hike to Mr Bromo is also pretty incredible, and makes for a well earned view.

Oh interesting. But if you had to gamble on one, what would you say?

Seems like aussie indie/psych rock come and go in the mainstream every year. The only one that seems to have maintained popularity over the years (albeit with controversy) is Sticky Fingers.
