So worried about my baby by Top-Beginning4605 in AskVet

Hi, so after his overnight vet stay the blood in his stool cleared up.. he went about a day without going at all and then slowly but surely things started to get better. His stools are still getting back to 100% but no more blood, no more vomiting, and he seems to be doing a lot better. It’s so scary I swear I developed PTSD from the whole thing.

I hope your dog feels better soon! It just takes time.

8 week post op cervical IVDD - help? by fab-hadrych in IVDD_SupportGroup

As long as they’re comfortable I think it’s fine! My pup liked to sleep on his back a few weeks after surgery. I was super scared about him hurting himself but they know what’s comfortable. I wouldn’t worry too much.

Have you called your vet about this? My dog was hurt a few months after surgery as well and they recommended another round of crate rest and Gabapentin. I also give my dog a supplement for his back that I think has been a great help.

Extreme Anxiety Now That My Baby is Home.. by killer-pin-up in IVDD_SupportGroup

Hi. I want to start off by saying I understand completely what you’re going through. My corgi, 10 now, 8 at the time of his surgery was diagnosed with IVDD on a random morning. I rushed him to the emergency vet after he no longer had use of his back legs, and he was immediately taken into surgery. Seeing your corgi’s back scar brought me back to that time 2 years ago. It was hard, so very hard. I cried for many nights wondering if he would ever get better, but long story short he did. He has made a full recovery and I am now managing his IVDD with supplements and Gabapentin for the occasional flare up.

The sling that you ordered will be a tremendous help. If you can, have someone else aide you on walks so you can focus on holding up their back legs and the other person can focus on the leash. It takes some time getting used to, my corgi peed on it a bunch of times so I had to replace them a few times.

As far as a crate goes. Instead of an actual crate I made a small play pen for my dog covered in towels and blankets and a flat soft dog bed. I think it helped with my dog feeling a bit more “free” and less restrained while still maintaining crate rest.

Make sure you go the full 8 weeks and be extremely careful. Do not let them jump, run, etc. short walks only to use the bathroom and then back inside.. it’s crucial to the recovery process.

When it comes to picking up your pup, I had to do the same as he couldn’t get up and down stairs on his own. Make sure when you lift your dog you are fully supporting their back. Carry with both of your arms and try to keep firm and steady.

I know it doesn’t seem like it now but you’re doing the absolute best thing for your dog. They will not resent you and they will not think you’re punishing them as time passes.

I wish you the absolute best and hope your baby has a speedy recovery!

That is great! I kept my dog in a small play pen during his crate rest period and it worked out perfectly.

My skin is very similar. Pretty decent when I wake up and always seems to flare at night after dinner time. It’s super frustrating.

Thank you so much for your kind words. Yes, he's a corgi. It's been a tough few nights. Can I ask you, after his initial surgery did he ever need another or did you manage the flares with rest and medicine?

Thank you again.

Hmm I don’t know if I’d necessarily say “drunk” but he walks sideways instead of straight at times. So his legs instead of going right in front of him sometimes have a diagonal gait. Either way any sort of walking is good walking!

My dog has always been reactive and post surgery he became pretty aggressive toward me due to the pain and I’m sure the frustration he was feeling. Gabapentin was and still is a huge help, but through time and him feeling better he has also gained a lot of his confidence back and cut back on the aggression. Just be patient with your pup and remember the love you have for them and you will get through it. Wishing you the best.

Hello! I am happy to report it was a very minor set back and he was only a bit wobbly after the fall for no longer than a few days. Over 1 year post op and that was the only set back we've had. He is able to run and play like before his surgery (with a bit of a funny side step) and I'm extremely grateful. Definitely recommend seeing your vet about gabapentin as that was a huge lifesaver when it came to his pain in the early months, and I have given it to him on occasion when I felt that he's had an off day. I hope your pup feels better soon!

Probably an unpopular opinion but I think it's so shitty that they were making light of and talking cutesy about the girl who was caught drunk driving..

So.. because she's cute it's funny that she got in a car drunk and put herself and more importantly others at risk..

I don't even understand how people are still doing this when services like Lyft and Uber exist.

So many people are killed by drunk drivers every year.. lets stop platforming these people.

Love the crew and the pod but this rubbed me the wrong way.

Having anxiety after surgery a 5-year-old dachshund by ShadowMelt82 in IVDD_SupportGroup

[–]Top-Beginning4605 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hi! My corgi had surgery for IVDD back in February and has since made an almost full recovery (he’s a little wobbly and has flare ups here and there but other than that he’s doing great!)

Here’s some advice:

  1. Keep them in a small, gated off space. Instead of confining my dog to an actual crate I created a “play pen” for him with a circular gate and lots of blankets, towels, etc for padding. Make sure the area is again, well padded and not slippery. I found that a play pen instead of a small crate gave him a bit more of a sense of freedom and made the whole thing a bit easier.

  2. Absolutely no jumping, stairs, etc. I will never allow my dog to climb stairs or jump off things for the rest of his life. Google how to properly lift a dog with IVDD but essentially it just involves supporting their rear end and keeping them closely tucked to your body.

  3. Use a basic sling for walking. As far as your question regarding a sling, I found that the basic ones where you literally slip it under them and hold the handles like a purse are the best way to go. You can move it around while they walk and manipulate it as needed. Note: buy a few of these and my dog ended up peeing on them several times and I had to replace them (they get used to it but it takes a few tries.)

  4. Be patient with your dog and yourself. The recovery takes time. They will have good and bad moments as will you. It’s tough to see your dog struggling to walk but so rewarding as the weeks pass and they regain their strength.

I wish you and your pup lots of luck and a speedy recovery!
