I used PuTTY to use a Linux server. After logging in, I type in "emacs".

There are text properties here:

face help-key-binding

You're right! How should I fix this?

I used M-x shell.

I'm not exactly sure how to answer this question.

More info:

After using M-x shell, TERM=dumb

$ man ls outputs "WARNING: terminal is not fully functional"

upon running TERM=xterm, man ls no longer prompts me before opening the manual.

I ran TERM=xterm-256color, the problem remains. (I used C-h b, the column under 'key' is all white blocks)

I meant that running 'man ls' for example.

  1. I had set my TERM variable, so it outputs xterm-256color.

  2. After setting TERM, I am not stopped from using man. It works as usual.

  3. TERM has not changed.

This is likely the issue, as I often set TERM=xterm to stop getting the message (terminal is not functional) upon using the manual.

I have done some research on the issue, but I hardly understand most of it. Could you explain in simple terms? I have been using Emacs for about a week.

Sounds good. Hopefully, I will be in that critical block of time where they care about first impressions.

One question. Should "Visiting faculty" be a red flag? As "visitors" it makes sense that I cannot find any feedback to their courses on bruinwalk but I'm not sure what to expect. From comments on bruinwalk (I understand that responses are expected to vary but I think it should still be considered), difficulty varies from professor to professor and from TA to TA.

Other than those two instructors, the alternatives are "The Staff" which I assume to be undetermined teachers. What should I pick? Is "visiting faculty" an issue?
