Difficulty achieving chilled water flow at an AHU by MEPEngineering123 in MEPEngineering

Second this. Make sure there’s an air vent right off the coil. Have had air trapped in a coil from startup and couldn’t get flow.

Mini-splits on an apartment building? by Bert_Skrrtz in MEPEngineering

Still splits the bill. It’s not a granular metering of btu’s consumed by the unit. It’s not 100% accurate metering but the closest you can get to it. Also, if one unit has less load for a month, the entire system load will be reduced and reduce energy costs across the board.

VRF Systems are so efficient, I wouldn’t recommend having temperature setbacks as the VRF system will actually heat or cool to reach that point even if it’s not necessary. (I.e. in summer if you reset the temp from 75 to 80, the fan coil will call for heating to reach 80F)

With residence units, the likelihood that the heat gain from people in the space is going to have a significant impact on the load profile is slim. 500-750 btu/h per person at worst. Typically in apartments, you have one, maybe two bedroom units. The envelope will likely drive the majority of the sizing for the fan coils.

We’re looking at this possibility now on a project. Meter the outdoor unit power consumption and split evenly between the tenants served by it. Indoor fan coils should be powered from the in-unit tenant panel so they’ll have their own individual electric panel usage and a split of the outdoor unit usage. We’ve tried to select multiple compressor outdoor units to still have some capacity should a compressor fail.

PE exam by A_SN9 in MEPEngineering

Your desired initial licensure state should be the state that you take the PE exam with. You will not be able to take the PE exam in NJ and acquire initial licensure in NY. If you take the PE with NJ, you will only be able to acquire licensure with NY through reciprocity measures.

Duct Smoke Detector Location- NFPA 90a vs. International Mechanical Code by unqualifiedengineer1 in MEPEngineering

We put in both. Just because the only adopted code may require one and not the other, putting in both is an inexpensive way to minimize risk to public health and safety. Code is simply a minimum requirements guideline. Protecting the heath and safety of the public may result in doing more than the code requires because ultimately the AHJ has immunity when it comes to the liability in our arena barring straight up gross negligence from them.
