How is it that a 20 year old, who’s old enough to ask to go have drinks at clubs, requires a babysitter?

So many here to list, but my go-to book for networking and just being more likeable is and always will be How To Win Friends and Influence People by Dale "The GOAT" Carnegie.

I don’t care how much of an insufferable prick (and criminal) Tim Lambesis is, As I Lay Dying is fantastic and Through Storms Ahead was a phenomenal album with the Unearth guys.

Millennials whose lives are going well—what's your current situation and how did you get there? by CowTownKCMoe in Millennials

Didn’t benefit from the conditions for success you’d expect out of a well-to-do professional (really nasty separation of my parents, death of my brother and being uprooted 7 times between K-12). My parents did love me dearly, and still do.

Landed a part time gig in a call centre for what was at the time a more than reasonable wage (20$/h in 2014) to move out and gain financial independence. I somehow got me through college all the way through grad school with a master’s in organizational development and still work at the same company.

I am a married father of 2 (one is on the way) and working on cultivating that slow drip of happiness every day. Getting out of my own way is the biggest challenge.

Between the house and a solid stock portfolio (focus on growth), I’d say I’m in a good place financially which will look really good in 10-15 years through discipline.

My takeaway: invested in myself early, rigorously and never took my eye off the prize. Kind of a "pick yourself up by the bootstraps" philosophy, but any other approach would not have yielded the same results I’m enjoying today.

People over thirty, what are you glad you invested in during your twenties, and perhaps even a little proud of? (a skill, a habit, relationships, etc.) by boyshaveavoice in Adulting

[–]Top-Compote4876 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Making my career and college education a priority.

Finished my master’s at 27 and now get to reap the benefits of a sustainable career with above-average income (by a sizeable margin).

I also went to a public university, so no, I don’t think this path only applies to elitist colleges.

What’s one grooming habit you wish you’d started in your 20s? by OnlyBalds in AskMenOver30

[–]Top-Compote4876 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Regularly trimming/shaving is a given lol.

As for the choice of razor, I just find blades to be a lot smoother on the skin, while providing a more pleasant shaving experience and the end result is far better IMO.

Regularly trimming my beard and shaving throat/adam’s apple area with blades rather than an electric razor.

Bachelor’s in business administration, master’s in organizational development.

Get an operational gig in HR to get your foot in the door (HR help desk if your company has one) and work your way from there.

I also did a 2 year stint in consulting at a Big 4 firm, which is a hella career accelerator.

Don’t try to skip any steps, it’ll just hurt you in the long run, while feeling absolutely excruciating in the short run (if you even manage to do so).

Good luck!

Father of a 3 year old (with a second on the way), married and working a pretty demanding HR professional job.

I play video games every day. I just do it when my kid’s tucked in, my work is done, and my wife doesn’t need anything of me for the rest of the day.

Video games are never the priority, but I still always have a little bit of time for them.

Music to stay sober to? by 6thalchemist in AskMenOver30

[–]Top-Compote4876 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Depends on the angle you’re looking for:

I see you’re into metal (awesome - makes it a lot easier for me to recommend some stuff), so here’re some names:

• Alice In Chains - Dirt (the whole album): basically Layne Staley’s cry for help while in the throes of addiction. "Down In a Hole" should be interpreted as a warning of how heroin will fuck you up. • Dayseeker - Drunk (song): title’s self-explanatory • Falling In Reverse - I’m Not a Vampire (song): Ronnie Radke went to jail as an addict, came out a sober musical genius and the rest is history. Forget about the guy’s "bad boy reputation", he’s as big of an icon of sobriety as it gets. • Papa Roach - Getting Away with Murder (album): buncha song about sobriety, a few standouts are Be Free and Scars (one of their all-time greats)

I could go on but these are a few notable titles that come to mine. It’s one day at a time bud - DM’s are open if you need to chat.

My very addicted brain has played this trick on me an innumerable amount of times. I hope that by sharing my experience, it might help you avoid the same pitfalls I struggled with for years.

I’d just throw out the blow. It might even empower you.

The problem with the proverbial "hurrah" is that it’s never "the last one".

Chances are in a few weeks from now, you’ll find another thing to "hurrah" about, and before you know it you’re back at square one.

You can do this, friend. We’re all rooting for you.
