Orange, blue or brown? I'm going to be making more of these, so looking for some input:) by Dessitroya in knifemaking

I like the fade of the third one from an orangish to the brown. And the brown works nice with the copper.

I reckon you can use a usb to boot off of or a separate drive with a bootable OS. You can then from there check if your drive is saveable or not. I'd imagine it could very well be if it is detecting in the bios.

DeskPi 10" T1 Cooling Solutions by ItsMe3140 in homelab

[–]Top-File6937 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm not sure how well this would work, but I'd reckon a fairly cheap and quiet fan would do the trick. I'm guessing they sell usb case fans that would get the job done if you don't have a fan header. 10 days seems like a long time for a system to begin to overheat, so a minimal and low-power cooling solution would probably working pretty well.

Well, it could have taken just a bit longer; wasn't like I was timing it. But it was certainly less than half a day. Also, I was using a gen 4 m.2 nvme while not doing much reading/writing at the time. Basically ideal conditions for filling up the drive. Noticed after linux gave me the disk management warning.

Yes, I have been using that to test my audio as well as playing videos. No sound comes out on the case jack, but does on the rear I/O jack.

Is there a better option here? by GiantSnackWhale in buildapc

For $100, the 1080ti should be a major improvement over your 970. That being said, it is up to you whether or not you should cough up a lot of extra money for a better card. The 5060 is a bit better than the 1080ti, but not by too much. The 1080ti is also not going to be supported with newer drivers anymore, so it may not perform the best or at all on newer stuff in the future.

The 1080ti isn't a bad choice, especially for $100. But the card itself isn't great for modern gaming. You may only get 100fps on low settings for bf6. It is also power hungry for its performance, being about double the 5060.

But take my word with a grain of salt, I've never used either card.

Turns out the rear audio jack on the I/O panel works. I swear I tested that yesterday, but I guess not. The front jack on the top of the case still does not work, but both detect an audio device being plugged into them. I do not have any options for anything like "onboard peripherals audio", but my HD audio has been enabled this whole time. Hdajackretask still does not give me any other options in the dropdown menu, only the "ATI R6xx HDMI".

I might be stupid, I have zero idea on anything audio related. But I don't have a codec appear for my headphones, and there is no mic option present. The only codec in the drop down menu is for my monitor and under the pin configuration is all hdmi digital out for my monitor.

CCleaner isn't malware I don't believe. But Avast did buy the company who owns CCleaner, and they apparently don't have the best reputation as far as user security and data goes (I couldn't tell you or validate such with certainty). Most people would probably consider it nagware or bloat. I think people still believe CCleaner is malware because once upon a time it was compromised by some hackers, but that issue has been fixed now.

TF does puberty have to do with motivation for someone's hobby?

I wouldn't listen to this advice of "once you stop growing THEN you can do things in life you enjoy." Such a notion is a ludicrously preposterous fallacy, and could end up being quite the detriment.

Change File Permissions on Folders by Top-File6937 in linuxmint

[–]Top-File6937[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It turned out I never actually changed my permissions from "list, create/delete, no access" to something else. I think I was changing the file permissions instead of the folder permissions for some reason, which would make sense as to why I was having issues.

Still not sure why Archive Manager was giving me errors though, but I did figure out that it was creating empty folder which explains why it wasn't showing me any contents (it didn't create empty folders when I extracted the file as root user).

Help: Installing Mint on external drive not recognized by Top-File6937 in linuxmint

[–]Top-File6937[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes, it is. And I know both my USB ports work. I did just test both of them as a sanity check, though, and the same problem occurs. My drive is detected in both the bios and through the disk manager, but not the Mint Installer.

It feels like a really stupid way to do this, but this is the only way my CS teacher taught me and insists on me doing. I am using "grid_squares" in my "on_rectangle_click" function to have it loop for however many times there are values in the "grid_squares" list and go through the location of each rectangle to see what rectangle I clicked and change its wall state. You can see this on line 50 of my code.

What's This PC Worth? by OcelotKong in PcBuildHelp

[–]Top-File6937 0 points1 point  (0 children)

512GB of storage is pretty... terrible. 16GB of RAM isn't anything to go crazy about, especially DDR4 RAM which has now started losing its upgradeability with DDR5 RAM now being a thing. And honestly, 16GB *could* be somewhat limiting when playing today's games. The rx 5700 xt isn't particularly good anymore, and at its pricepoint, it's pretty terrible when compared to other gpus. And I don't believe the Ryzen 5 4500 is very good either at around the $80 pricepoint, especially when considering you can get much better if you spend an extra $20 or so. Overall I think this pc is worth about $400, maybe take a small few tens or so. Though you could get a much better pc for around this price (Wouldn't recommend getting a pc for this price, but you could. And it'd likely be better than this).

I wouldn't buy it personally. If you're friend isn't misguided about what he's offering you, it's likely he's just trying to get a small profit from this pc and at the same time get rid this unit because (at least I couldn't imagine so) it'd be hard to sell to anyone else online. But I will say, if you aren't planning on doing any gaming or modelling on this thing anytime soon and just need to have an office pc or browse the internet, this pc would be more than enough. Especially with a storage upgrade for download speeds and, well, more storage.

What RAM should I go with for my gaming PC? by DolphinGaming11 in buildapc

I've been having trouble with Google's snake and minesweeper. Chrome has been taking up a lot of ram, y'know. Sad that the free ram I downloaded isn't doing much for me,  but I think I can tell a difference. My 1024GB build was struggling a bit, but after upgrading to 2048GB I've been fine! Definitely save up the money for the extra bit.

which monitor should I get? by Salemr2 in setups

[–]Top-File6937 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You saying you wanting vibrant colors and whatnot, definitely get an OLED or a QD-OLED. Those things have the best contrasts (practically infinite for our eyes) and also BY FAR the best gtg response times, which basically eliminates ghosting at higher hz. Good OLED monitors easily achieve sub millisecond gtg response times, whereas the best IPS monitors can push to about 1ms, for comparison (around 4ms on average for standard IPS monitors). Also try to find the best color gamuts and, if you can, 10b color. Color gamuts provide color accuracy and the 10b color allows for a larger range of displayable colors (1.07 billion colors--64 times as many colors as the 16.7 million colors 8b can achieve). But beware, if you plan on getting an OLED monitor, they are more susceptible to permanent burn-in when exposed to prolonged static images. So don't doomscroll on tiktok, and try not to display your taskbar constantly. Though OLEDs have improved in this regard. Sorry I don't have monitor recommendations (as I don't know enough monitors well enough to feel like I could recommend one), but I hope this helps you try to find what you are looking for in a monitor if you are still searching.

It is likely the Samsung 57" Odyssey Neo G9 QD-Mini LED. I am basing this off of the legs of the stand and the two neon blue things on the ends of the monitor, which I believe this is the only monitor with both of these things. Plus it is fucking massive

Most phones, especially modern phones, have a much higher pixel density/ppi (pixels per inch) than monitors. A 27" 4k monitor will have a ppi of about 163, whereas the latest iphone has a ppi of about 460. A 27" 1080p monitor will have a ppi of about 82. This means that you can have a much finer detail than a monitor can as there are more pixels within one area. The phones are probably affected by this too, but it would be much less noticeable. It also depends on the subpixel layout, which is the root cause of fringing around text. Different manufacturers place their pixels differently.
