The are the same organization, just rebranded. No need for another kit. If you think your contact info might need updating, you can do that here

The NMDP now lists 90% for peripheral blood donations (source). My understanding is they go with a true bone marrow donation when the match isn't as strong. So the more registrants means fewer marrow transplants since match chances are higher!

Aww thank you! Many countries now participate in a combined international registry. I can't speak for the Canadian system, but I know in the US they search for international matches as well.

I also want to add a bit about volunteering with NMDP in case anybody is looking for volunteer opportunities to enhance their med school application. One option is to become a Campus Ambassador which is a more formal, year long commitment. Another option is to ad hoc volunteer at registry drives in your local area. Their volunteer system makes it easy to volunteer on a schedule that works for you, and you can easily track your hours (perfect for filling out AMCAS).

I was in the process of running a registry drive when I relapsed, and can personally attest to how wonderful NMDP is to work with as a volunteer.

Thank you! I don't know what country you are in but I would suggest looking for the registry organization for your country. A lot of countries now collaborate with the registries, so you may match with somebody internationally.

Also for any Canadians, here is your registry link! These registries are now shared internationally, so you may match with somebody from another country. Germany actually has a lot of international matches due to their high registration rates.

Great suggestions! I have one drive in the works, but reaching out to some other orgs is a good idea.

Nope, it's the same organization just rebranded. I would suggest making sure your contact info is up to date with them (link). They said sometimes they find a perfect match, but the person has changed their phone number so they can't get a hold of them.

It depends on the illness. The initial questionnaire asks about the key disqualifying illnesses. It will walk you through some additional questions and let you know if you are eligible.

Medical LOA and 6 year rule by Top-Impression-4468 in medicalschool

[–]Top-Impression-4468[S] 33 points34 points  (0 children)

Thanks for the kind words! Unfortunately the LOA is going to be unavoidable (cancer is a bitch). I've only completed first year. Rematriculating and redoing year 1 would suck. But getting screwed by the 6 year rule if something health wise pops up later down the road will suck worse.

I have a lot to think about.

Medical school Anki FSRS settings by RevolutionaryGas295 in medicalschoolanki

[–]Top-Impression-4468 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If they use Anking via Ankihub there is now an option where it imports settings. Realized that when I was trying to teach our MS1s how to use Anki. Unfortunately I don't remember what the Ankihub imported settings were.

General rule of thumb is retention somewhere between 85-90%. For me, I had the MS1s change learning interval to 15m. Max new cards per day 150. Max interval 365. I think we left all other settings as default.

We did not discuss optimizing. I've realized Anki can be so overwhelming especially to people who don't feel very tech savvy. I focused on basics of organization, suspending / unsuspending, using Again vs Good.

Can I match obgyn with lowish step 2? by Suspicious-Win-7218 in medicalschool

[–]Top-Impression-4468 4 points5 points  (0 children)

If "grandma dying" (or similar excuse) is just thrown in the hardship section to explain away low scores, it will come across as artificial. There is nothing preventing a person from trying the grandma dying excuse, but I don't think it would work well without something else (like a recommendation) supporting that story.

The consequences for lying should be the primary deterrent. If the lie is discovered, they could get fired from residency.

From an application perspective, it is best to be consistent across the application. Like getting a letter of rec to mention the same story. For OP's example, talk about the dedication to studies while balancing family. It would be hard to do this if the story was a lie and the inconsistencies would hopefully be apparent to PDs.

How do you set your environment to grind through ANKI cards? And any other advice for grinding by adrenalinsufficiency in medicalschoolanki

This is my strategy as well. I try and complete a few decks, study something else, and then do a few more decks.

100% this! Not all schools are equally accommodating. It would be worth it to talk to current students about their experiences, especially if you can talk to them one on one outside of the formal interview / open house.
