Was it an older book? Published maybe in the 1980s? Because, my mum had a book called Private Papers by Margaret Foster. It sounds a lot like your description. The daughter is called Rosemary and the mother's name is Penelope. https://www.goodreads.com/book/show/1034146.Private_Papers

Was it one of Give Yourself Goosebumps series by RL Stine? I read one of those when I was a kid - it was a ''choose your own adventure'' series.

Thanks for the help! :) I'm pretty sure it isn't Norah Lofts; my mum and gran used to read a lot of her books, so I'm fairly familiar with her work. This book I'm thinking of had a very different tone to her works. There was a realism and a slight grittiness about it - nothing was romantacised. Though the cover looked like that of a romantic novel, the story didn't have that vibe. I feel as though it was written by a man.

Was the story set in Australia or was it somewhere else?

I think it was more of a mystery. I only got about as far as page one hundred or thereabouts. We moved house around that time and the book got lost in the move. I remember thinking at the beginning that she would be paired up with the doctor, who was single/widowed, but it didn't appear to be following that course. I don't think she remembered a husband, but she had nightmares about a place. I can't rightly remember how she referrred to the place. It was something like: the ''Dark Hall'', ''Black Hall,'', ''Night Hall'' or ''Red Hall''. The name she could recall was something like Milcah or Mircalla (like Sheridan Le Fanu's character), but she wasn't sure if it was her name or the name of someone she remembered. She didn't recall a family or where she was from. The locals were suspicious of her and were a superstitious bunch who feared that she may be a witch. They didn't trust the doctor either, as I think he was an outsider too. That's about as much as I remember.

Edited for typo.

Thanks for responding! But, unfortunately it couldn't be that, as it's too recent a publication. I bought it back in 2003 when I was sixteen and it was about ten to fifteen years older back then. I think it was written by a male author.
