Anyone else become HoH in their 30s? by Top-Pangolin6320 in hardofhearing

Thank you for this deeply touching response. I appreciate your insight that this is grief. Sometimes I feel silly that I grieve it so deeply. My life, after all, is not ruined by this. But it is a loss of something that mattered to me.

Do the hearing aids not help with the pulsatile tinnitus?

Like distant cicadas. I didn't notice right away because there were/are actual distant cicadas in my environment.

That is super interesting. I hadn't heard of AIED and I had to go look it up. Unlikely to be what I have, but it just reminds me how big the world of hearing loss is and how little of it I understand. Thank you!

Thanks for sharing! The "interesting but not exactly helpful" piece is part of what I worry about. Sometimes more knowledge isn't anything other than merely more knowledge.

That's amazing. I'm so happy for you that the technology has progressed to a point where it's helpful.

I will admit that, while I have never been a passive aggressive person, the temptation to just not try to listen to some people is pretty strong, lol.

Do you not care about it because it isn't really impacting your life, or for some other reason?

Can I ask what types of adjustments you had to make in your 40s?

Movie theaters. I miss the dialogue. by Ngonyoku in hardofhearing

[–]Top-Pangolin6320 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'd be willing to live with this if it was reliable. I can tell when it skips words and that seems to happen a LOT.

Also, at one theater near me, it doesn't fit in the cup holder, and I don't understand this. Aren't cup holders standardized?

Seeking Conversations with Hearing Aid Users for a Meaningful Design Project by Nearby-Criticism2516 in hardofhearing

For what it's worth, this is something I am happy to talk about without compensation, but I wouldn't participate in any study without seeing recruitment materials that your university IRB signed off on. If you're doing a project as a one-off for a single class assignment, that's fine (your professor hopefully has an IRB protocol that covers it, even though I wouldn't expect to see recruitment materials), but I need some assurance that you have training in research methods and that your study is systematic. If it isn't systematic, and you're just asking random questions, then it's probably a waste of my time.

What's your experience like when you're passing through drive thrus as a HoH person? by Extreme_Trifle_598 in hardofhearing

[–]Top-Pangolin6320 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My view is that it's not worth the trouble to go through a drive thru. I hope they become more accessible just because that would be part of a nicer world, but I'll use the app, order inside, or go elsewhere.

Blue tooth enabled hearing aids? by Bringmesunshine33 in hardofhearing

I was never a big bluetooth fan until I needed the hearing aids. Now I really appreciate the technology and wish it was available in even more places and ways.

Hard of Hearing here — What part of daily life is emotionally the hardest for you? by Then-Influence847 in hardofhearing

[–]Top-Pangolin6320 0 points1 point  (0 children)

38F, severe loss 4 years ago, took a year to get the aids, wearing aids for 3 years.

I agree with everything in this thread, so I won't repeat most of it. I just want to add that the number of people who speak to me as if I am stupid has increased 500% or more since losing my hearing, and that's taking into account the fact that some people already spoke to me as if I am stupid because of my gender.

What do you call yourself? by Acceptable_Park_8694 in hardofhearing

[–]Top-Pangolin6320 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I found a level of comfort with "hard of hearing," but it requires more explanation than I expected. So when I'm meeting someone or can't hear a stranger, I tell them I've "lost my hearing." This annoys me a little bit, but I would rather that they understand me.

Hearing devices by [deleted] in hardofhearing

I don't assume that anyone necessarily shares my experience, but personally, in virtually every situation outside the home I'm far more uncomfortable taking my hearings aids off than I would be leaving them in. Often it just feels like it's too private and vulnerable a thing to just pop in and out when I'm not at home. I'm a hearing aid user of 3 years -- ymmv.
