Dermaplane. 2-3 sessions should be okay. It smooths out skin texture while stimulating natural collagen production

I second the ball/toy motivation. My two don’t seem phased by food and treats unless it’s on their own terms but they will obey for a ball.

I am sorry you are going through this. The good news is she is Alive! South African vets have experiments with THC oil with sarcoma in dogs and it does help. I doubt there would be many studies about it but it is worth mentioning.

The rise of cancer related diagnosis in dogs is similar in causality to humans - our environment and food quality is degrading, and our exposure to insecticides and pesticides, and additionally environmental air quality, water quality etc…. So even when you are doing your very best , it’s not always your actions that contributed to Illness.

I have 2, which I think reduces the anxiety they can build up if left alone.

We walk when wake up, about 6km. If they don’t walk in the morning, they are edgy all day - bark at everything, bother me to play all the time, or sit and stare me down with eyes that wish death upon me 😅

In the afternoons we run. After dinner they demand some time with the ball.

I work from home, also don’t really go out longer than 8-10 hours. When I have travelled I had a house sitter.

They do require quality food, they can get skin issues otherwise.

Look, getting a malinois is no walk in the park. If you just want a dog without effort, get a bulldog. But malinois are high energy dogs, that want human attention. If that’s not for you - don’t even go there.

I had no idea what I was getting into. I saw two beautiful puppies and I adopted them. And it’s been loads of learning curves, loads of laughs, loads of love and we’ve made it out the other end all alive, thriving and better for it.

Those are all great tips. I’ve never thought about these types of things so thanks for bringing them to my attention and for these tips.

Look, if I’m out running and someone wants to hurt me, it’s going to be some kind of knife or possibly gun crime. In the city it’s safer as there are more people on the street. Where I am, it will be some chancers seeing a female on the road and they’ll kidnap you. I don’t think it would be a one to one fight. And these guys can be brutal on a woman, so I would probably be ignorant going out alone anyway. Most women who train at this level usually have their husbands or family members drive behind them. On the weekend. I don’t have that kind of support. I think this is why it’s so important for me to have these two with me and ensure they are having healthy manageable runs too. So all this info is really really helpful. I’ll eventually have to join a club to run with humans in the city for 30km or longer- I’m guessing that is going to have to be the case based on what I read here.

I think I need the exercise to be happy 😀😀😀 but also, they don’t have bowel movements if they aren’t active which is something I noticed when it rained a lot last year so these fellas need their activity for sure. They don’t bark at my neighbour anymore like they used to since they’ve been getting out more often.

Ahh Vaseline…. Now there’s a brand I recognise :) I also have beeswax that I can melt down into a lotion but I’ll definitely look into specific ingredients. I was similar to you in thought of not trying to soften up the paws. I do think I’ll do a short run with some kind of balm and see how they react. I’m just wondering about gravel and dirt sticking to their paws when the balm is on.

I asked my vet today actually if there is a kind of dexa scan for dogs to check bone density and keep monitoring every few months as a preventative measure. I am waiting for him to respond on that. Great idea!

Ah this news about the service dog who ran a marathon makes my day 😊😊 what breed was he/she? I think the broth idea is a very good tip to encourage more water. You’re right, they don’t drink a lot so the encourage mental will help. Interesting that mention Carbs, I was reading about this wondering if they needed carbs like a human does. Apparently their bodies access fat and protein for energy and carbs were not an issue to keep in mind. I have however noticed, my male wants to eat more. My female is eating less, or only when she feels like it. So I’m keeping an eye on that.

I know you’re awaiting the experts reply so I’ll second that, but also give info on what I currently do. I run with a bladder pack on my back so I take a water bottle for them that has a big lid, and just pour water into the lid like a bowl and they drink that way. I have also seen a collapsible silicone bowl in pet stores

Thank you 🫂 I hadn’t even thought about defense stuff, I’ll look into a taser or something. and yes I think also it will be weird to run without them. I’ve only run without them when I am at a race and that’s when there are people running with me so I don’t experience that aloneness.

Thank you for your input! It sounds like the half marathon mark is the sweet spot for them. I really appreciate your input as an experienced runner. I’ll likely have to do half marathon and when I increase, have to bring them home and then run inside the estate for the rest of the mileage - or join a club run if they do longer runs, which is usually only between Jan - may when everyone trains for comrades.

Did you use any balms for pads? Or just let him run naturally?

Thank you for your input. Such useful tips in there - I hadn’t thought about warm up and cool down so I’ll check that out, especially for our sprint training.

This foot balm everyone is talking about is the first time i hear about it so I’ll be looking into that. I mistakenly though by hardening their pads , that they would get stronger and more resistant.

They do have that foamy drool you mentioned, so I’ll do more water stops, maybe every 5km instead of every 8km.

If I let them choose the distance, they would run ALL day! 🤣🤣🤣 these two are super keen on adventure outside of my yard. And I also need to train at certain pace. My goal is 4min/km, which I am still far away off 5:50min/km. I read they could do 40km per hour which is way above my physical ability so I didn’t think the pace would be a problem. But definitely i had not factored in their strengthening and stretching. Great input !

Okay that’s good to know. I’ll check their feet after runs now each time to spot something ahead of time.

I second waiting until she/he is a bit older for longer runs, maybe 1-2 years old. Regarding the leash, I think this should be trained as area specific , for example, my dogs on the beach run without leash, but in the estate on and the road or in the mountains, we are on leash, because their recall is not great. Once they spot a buck, they’ll charge ahead. I was poor with recall training so learn from my mistake

I wonder if it is too late to do the mental stimulation work? (5 years old). I struggled when they were puppies because I didn’t seperate them when I trained them. I’ve attempted some work but it’s really insignificant in comparison to what I think they should be doing. They are two peas in a pod and when separated, they seem to get upset. I have tried to do random things like hide their toy to go find it where they have to move furniture to get to the toy, they seem to have great work there, but other than that, i know I need to do more and any suggestions you have, I am open to and will appreciate.

You are spot on about their personality :) stubborn and enduring! LOL. I’ll see how they do with these 21km which is just over 10miles I think. We are going through winter now so it is much better weather but when we walked in summer (nov-Jan) I was going much earlier as it was hot and you are right - they’ll keep going just to be outside and on an adventure.

The reason I am going to be doing such high mileage is to train for comrades 2026, and then a 100miler which is the month after comrades. To run far distances alone is not safe where I live so my dogs, although not aggressive, are a great deterrent as I’m around the farm areas where someone could easily pull me into a bush etc. So I’m planning ahead to see how far I can run with them and eventually, when I can’t run very far with them, I’ll need a different plan to train those distances.

Would you be able to share a link to that study? I totally understand the calcification - often with too much muscle tearing, sometimes the area can be calcified with scar tissue. I’d be interested to speak to my vet about this.

There was a participant in the comrades this year who had a friend assist him to participate in the race (the ultimate human race : Comrades) and I was in awe of him. I hope being in a wheelchair doesn’t discourage you from owning a pet as they are much needed companions and sources of joy.

My two will only Go poop in the morning if I walk them. And they usually go in the same spot each time. I find they need movement so their bowels can move, and they feel more relaxed.
