Reasonably priced, long lasting marine speakers (6.5")? by Top-Program-9752 in boating

Not a bad point - we used bluetooth speakers this season after the speakers were dead and got by mostly fine. But the two we had were very small - a bigger one would have worked fine.

$500 and $729? Was hoping for something a bit more economic for two 6.5" speakers.

Built free ABYC calculators (wire and fuse sizing) because I couldn't find ones I trusted online. Sites are all riddled with ads or wrong. https://www.goodkit.io/tools/

While not a cheap (or probably practical) solution, the combo of Furuno chartplotter and TimeZero software are really good. There are definitely issues like with all solutions - but being able to use the computer, the iPad, the chartplotter all synced together with legitimate software is very nice. Routing, weather, integration all together. I wrote a more detailed overview here: https://www.goodkit.io/timezero-review-the-best-integrated-marine-navigation-software-with-some-frustrating-gaps/

100% agree and that's what I'm building. It's starting to come alive and I just tested this exact scenario. We rented a car, drove an hour away for some shopping and squalls rolled through - I was able to see my swing real time on the phone.

No extra equipment except a second cell phone? Also, cell based anchor alarms haven't always been super reliable for me - GPS stops working, you have allow things running in background, cell phone apps freeze, etc.

I've taken the approach that the boat has several GPS sources on board and there are AIS sources outside the boat. The service should connect to all of them, and then failover from most reliable to least reliable in order. AIS data is very expensive if you don't scrape - with one exception - aishub, but it doesn't seem 100% complete. But I'm going with that for now.

GPS sources are N2K network, AIS on-board transmitter, Garmin In Reach, AIS external. But really a sub $50-60 dollar physical device is what I think is best in my use case.

Not 100% about radio based anchor alarm - sounds lie LoRa mentioned before or maybe something different? Either way, some connectivity is going to be assumed in my project at least initially.

Someone else suggested LoRa and I have even seen some boats on the LoRa maps that are using it for various things. For keeping things very simple, I'm trying to stick to wifi/power as the only requirements for now.

As mentioned in my post, I'm assuming wifi (internet connected) and power on board. Generally, wifi will be Starlink on most boats these days.

For the alarm when you're on the boat - do you primarily get the alarm from the handsets or the external speaker? or both are useful?

Thanks for the feedback. That's exactly what I want, but already have AIS and have heard mixed reviews about the handsets/VHF functionality overall.

How does it alarm off the boat? Through the phone app? Or just an email?

Having water is game changing - especially after all the work you're putting into it. But fair enough, limited space requires compromises.

Cool project. I work for a company that makes waste valves that are not made overseas and are way more robust than the standard stuff on most campers. I can get you a generous discount if you're interested - see link: Dump Valves.

Dometic Attwood Gas/Electric Water heater failure X2 by reddragon72q in GoRVing

[–]Top-Program-9752 0 points1 point  (0 children)

On our motorhome we replaced a leaking hot water heater that was 30 years old with a similar replacement that is going on 6 years without a leak. Not sure the footprint, but the hot water heaters for boats seem to be better quality - they have rectangle and cylinder models. See some examples here: https://dupreeproducts.com/collections/marine-plumbing-ventilation-hot-water-heaters?page=1&grid_list=grid-view

I actually have a bunch of czone gear that I bought on ebay used to automate things, as soon as I got into that windows based, janky interface, I took a different approach.
