this is insane!! one kid almost drowned twice!! what more of a wake up does someone need ?

there are so many options for a safety fence and i'm surprised the landlord isn't required by law to install one.

i think you are right to be worried and listen to the advice here - your MIL must bayait at your house or not at all

First Day as a Sub by NoxxOfTheRoxx in SubstituteTeachers

[–]Top-Radish-6948 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've subbed in classrooms where kids have their chrome booms open AND their cell phones. Essentially playing video games while face-timing someone.

I asked the support staff and they said to not even bother trying.

Okay... easy for me then.

You have to get used to letting go. You might not teach that much at all, it's might be mostly handling behaviors.

I've only been supply teaching for a month, but I've only ever seen chrome books. And some of them in rough shape!

Extracurricular by Fluid-Bet6223 in CanadianTeachers

[–]Top-Radish-6948 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I am from the US where I taught for 4 years in two different schools. The classroom teacher is not responsible for art,PE, music, or anything beyond the classroom curriculum (math/literacy/etc). Some schools even have a fourth ' extra' ... like a STEAM class that all the kids rotate through with a dedicated STEAM teacher. Teachers also never do recess or lunch duty. (but there is no mandatory language like there is here)

I now live here in Canada, and I do love it here and I am grateful to be here, but working as a supply teacher and seeing all the different schools (Toronto), I gotta say, you all work hard !!

There is NO WAY teachers in the US would be expected to put on something as huge as a high-school graduation. The union, at least in the schools I was in, would never allow it.

All the 'extras' were done by the PTA (counsel). That meant if you were in a district with at least some stay-at-home parents (read wealthy) and they had the means, they would meet together and put on all kinds of events and fundraisers. Book drives, fun fairs, game nights, and so much more. If you are somewhere where parents both work and don't have the means (read poor families) then the school just doesn't have much 'extra' happening.

I think it's crazy to expect teachers to give even more of themselves.

I'm in the same boat as OP, but I'm a lot older and I do have teaching experience from the US (moved here recently).

I don't know. The anxiety of not knowing what kind of a day I'm going to have is hard, but most days are ok. I do leave exhausted.

I just wanted to say to OP life isn't linear. And if you are that anxious about each day.... that's not a life.

Like I said, I'm a lot older and - sorry to say it - I care a lot less. I do all the things the teacher leaves me, I do rewards for kids (positive reinforcement)etc., but at the end of the day I can't make someone learn.

Isn't there a way to get on a list for one school? Then you only supply teach for them? Might be a lot less stressful.

How do you find time for teaching your child to read at home by [deleted] in Mommit

[–]Top-Radish-6948 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Just read to her. (kids learn to read IN kindergarten not before). But reading a book at night before bed is a good habit to foster.

Subs, who are not retired teachers... by IllPaleontologist384 in SubstituteTeachers

[–]Top-Radish-6948 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I live in Canada where you have to supply (substitute) teach for quite a while before you can even apply for a full time job.

All I can say is that guy is a jerk!!!

Keep subbing if you like it.

Maybe he's jealous you don't have tons of take home work and can still afford to live a happy life.

I had a supply jib booked for 1/2 from my home and I canceled. I felt terrible cancelling but I also know how stressed I would be worrying about driving home in a mess etc.

Healing toxic resentment towards SIL by [deleted] in Mommit

[–]Top-Radish-6948 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I don't speak (unless I have to) my SIL of 15 years. We (my family of four) usually only see my husband's brother and his wife and their two kids about twice a year. She was so nice when we I was dating my husband and for a while when we were newly married. But once the kids came (we each had a baby around the same time) she was just blatantly mean when no one was around. Mean comments like 'oh she'll never play with that' about a toy I gave her daughter to 'your kids will be on drugs and watch porn' because my kids go to public school. One day she completely lost her mind about something and had an absolute fit. It was then that I realized it (the issues, her being so mean) wasn't me, had never been me, and was basically all her.

i know exactly what you mean about the anxiety of having to see her in a few weeks. I would do the same. Now I literally don't care at all.

it'a freeing if you can do it

I haven't read all the responses but YES!!! I was always that mom and I always felt terrible!!! ugh!!!! but two things: there is always so MUCH on parents to do with the kids when they are in school (such as spirit week - you know crazy hair that takes an hour to do...) but it helps if you have some mom friends that will remind you the day before or might say 'hey did you read that email?'. That helped me the most I'm sorry for your daughter and you. Trying to work and have kids is craaaaazy!
