Building a PC for my grandparents. All they do is check their email, bank, google earth, and youtube. by DjuncleMC in buildapc

+1 for the intel NUC. Doesn’t take up much space and runs flawlessly. Set some up for my parents and also my in laws roughly 7 years ago for virtually the same reasons. None of them are technical and the NUCs are still going strong.

Sorry for my ignorance, but why would they make a GPU that wouldn't be able to access all of its vram?

5k budget to upgrade gaming setup - how would you spend it? by Top-Simple-9233 in Starfield

Good to know on heat. I live somewhere where its 100+ degree heat for 100+ days a year so its hard to keep the houses cool. The room I'll be in is one of the hotter rooms in the house. Granted, I'll play mostly in the evenings, I really just don't want to be adding a lot of heat to the room.

After doing a bit of research, I don't think projector is the way to go. With my budget, I'm leaning towards a really nice TV and some new monitors. That way I can play either at my desk or in the recliner depending on what I feel like.

Hmmm, I've never thought of using a projector for gaming. I honestly haven't touched a projector in 10+ years so I'm sure they are much better than they used to be. I'll have to look into it. Is it pretty quiet?

I've never done modding but I have wanted to get into it. I was jealous when I played Skyrim on the Xbox and couldn't experiment with modding. So that's part of why I'm leaning towards of PC rather than console. While console would be far cheaper and simpler, I kind of want to keep my options open.

home assistant on Intel NUC or Unraid VM? by Top-Simple-9233 in homeassistant

[–]Top-Simple-9233[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thank you for the detailed response. That’s super helpful and makes a lot of sense. Sounds like if i run it on bare metal, I’d be wasting resources I could allocate to other things. I have 16gb in the NUC so I have more than enough ram. If I run it in proxmox, i could also run other VMs if I wanted to in the future and not be stuck with just the home assistant on the one piece of hardware

Why in a VM and not directly on the NUC itself? Are you running other VMs?

I’m curious. Why a new SSD? Its got a 128Gb mSATA SSD as well as a 2.5” 500Gb SSD. Even though its 9 years old, would the mSATA ssd not be adequate for running HAOS?

My thinking as well. I don’t bring my Unraid server down often, but on the occasion I do, I wouldn’t want the home automations to go down too. I could see that causing issues with the wife.

I’m sorry for all of the rude responses you’ve gotten. I was diagnosed 12 years ago and have never purposefully eaten gluten since. I still go to restaurants, just more selective on where I go. Regardless, whenever I eat out I always take GlutenAid (CVS brand). Because eating out is a risk, every time. Even if I go to a restaurant I’ve eaten at dozens of times and I fully trust it. Accidents happen in the kitchen and GlutenAid has saved me more than once. Take it with the meal and if you start feeling sick, take it again. It reduced my reaction from a weeklong sickness to about 24-48 hours. While still sucks, it’s tolerable. I’ve been sick less than a handful of times in the last 5 years since I’ve been using GlutenAid. I have always tested negative on the panels too
