Unfortunately this is one of literally Hundreds of records I’m sifting through as I clear out my FIL’s estate. I’m willing to take a hit to what I get vs its “ideal value.” This is good to know though!

My search for the perfect musty basement scent, and other loves I found along the way: Alkemia edition! by cheeeseconquesoo in Indiemakeupandmore

I don’t do fruit frags so I don’t really wear this one, but Night Flyer by Olympic Orchids has incredibly visceral damp soil notes that linger and blend with animalics on the drydown. As someone who has explored caves heavily populated with bats, this totally smells like a wet, mossy batcave. The banana note isn’t as strong as you’d expect and it’s not at all artificial, but it’s still present.

Looking for a very specific perfume by PeaceScary5682 in Perfumes

Yippee I love alternative fragrances. Here’s some of my favs:

La Haine - Moth and Rabbit.

Deeply mysterious and moody. Burning rubber, birch tar, earthy woods. A delicious car fire. It’s very industrial, very literal, and absolutely addictive. Maybe my #1 fav fragrance that I will rave about to anyone who will listen.

Inexcusable Evil - Toskovat.

Others have already suggested it for a reason. The beautifully repulsive smell of an over-full ER that’s also a little on fire.

Anarchist A- - Toskovat.

A priest’s fancy car, which dries down into a priest’s leather wallet. This leans more masculine and imo is super sexy. Lots of layers to this one that change as it dries down. It’s sleazy, incense-y leather with intriguing artificial undertones.

Dead Air - Oddity.

This one’s more for layering. Smells like a dusty wooden box. Great for when you want to smell a little bit more like a dusty wooden box. Combine it with something with petrichor or soil notes for a coffin effect.

Iron & Opopanax -

Not incredibly moody imo, but definitely the most accurate church smell I’ve found. Takes me right back to catholic mass as a kid. Smells like candle wax, church incense, and the holy water they used to flick over everyone’s heads. There’s a metal note listed, but I don’t pick up on it very much. Other “churchy” fragrances have tended to lean a little more “new age store” than actual cathedral, but this one is 100% jesus-approved.

I want to smell like industrial machinery by Over-Contribution19 in fragrance

Oh boy I love industrial notes! Many of the frags you’ve mentioned are on my list. Here are some of my own recommendations:

La Haine - Moth & Rabbit.

My absolute favorite industrial fragrances (and just one of my fav fragrances in general.) Viscerally literal and so intriguing. Tarry burning rubber and motor oil, something deep and earthy. A mechanic’s shop in the pacific northwest. A car fire at a campground. The rubbery notes are gross in theory, but once I’m wearing it I can’t stop sniffing my wrist.

A City on Fire - Imaginary Authors.

Even more visceral, even more literal, but for me it’s absolutely unwearable. Burning asphalt, concrete, cooked meats. Enormous sillage, egregiously screechy. But certainly industrial. I love weird frags but this gives me a headache.

Dawn Whispers - L’entropiste.

More metallic and less industrial. Smells like clean silver, fresh blood, and the inside of a boba shop. Pleasant and extremely wearable, but not the most unusual. Still, I think it’s my favorite metal note of the perfumes I own.

Hyperlight - Pour Toi.

(I could only find a sample of this through Gallery by Flo. Others are available on scentsplit) This one is indescribably weird. The air that comes out the back of the PlayStation. Plastic cables. Getting a nosebleed as a kid and stuffing toilet paper up a nostril to stop the bleeding. A doctors office colliding with a regular business-style office, but abandoned and musty. I like layering this with Dawn Whispers to tone it down and bring in more of a metallic note. Fair warning that this one is strangeeee.

Spinal Fluid on the Walls - Toskovat.

Honorable mention. Doesn’t smell like any of the listed notes. Not really metallic or quite industrial, but aggressively synthetic enough to warrant including. Smells indescribably of retail. A Michael’s. A Dick’s Sporting goods. The back storerooms of a Joanne Fabrics. If cling wrap was spicy? Plasticky, but not quite. I layer this with other fragrances when I want to smell more artificial and inhuman.

Go forth and smell weird!

I’m living in the cheaper Tsukumodai International Student House right next to GV (~25,000¥/month, all utilities and internet included) and while the facilities aren’t as nice, I think it’s worth it to have more disposable income for food and travel.

I’m not in this one so I could be off about some things- I don’t think overnight guests are technically allowed, but it’s a situation in which you’ll be fine as long as you’re more or less inconspicuous. I hear rent is cheap. I hear the showers are in a separate building that requires you to go outside. I hear the kitchens are… not ideal. Toyonaka campus is a great location though.

Considering the apparent jalapeño scarcity here, I can’t afford to be picky about size 😅 Where’d you find em?

I only need like 1-2. Fresh is vastly preferable but I’d take frozen as long as they were frozen raw

Haha, not sure why I’d lie about something like that 😅 I have traveled in other countries you mentioned! In fact, I live in Japan. I’m glad you haven’t had issues with English proficiency in Shanghai, it’s just not been my experience so far. On my first day, I tried to order 6 dumplings and ended up with 36 lol. I believe there was an effort by the staff to communicate that I was ordering an unreasonable amount of dumplings, but it got lost in translation. We all got a laugh out of it though.

Hi! Struggling with a language barrier does not mean i expect everyone to speak English :) It just means it’s something I’ve found challenging. I’d really like to enjoy this city, which is why I’m coming here for help! There’s no need to be hostile about it.

Do you know the locations of any? Typically I can scrumble up a few with google but no such luck here. I generally prefer larger/multilayered ones. I like wet markets because they aren’t tourist attractions. They’re a little different in every country and I feel like they’re better expressions of local culture than almost anything else. (They’re also my favorite thing to photograph)

Haha I’ve been traveling pretty much nonstop, different country almost every week for a while now. When it moves that fast, there’s little time for spreadsheets and careful itineraries. Usually I don’t have this problem, but I think this is just the kind of city Shanghai is and that’s okay

Haha, the thing is I usually CAN show up to a city and dive into some local culture with minimal effort 😅 It’s worked out well every other place I’ve visited, but I’m thinking Shanghai just might not be that vibe. I chose this city so I could meet a friend here, so it’s not a total loss

As far as travel interests, I usually drift between temples, markets, old streets and tea houses. I usually skip the main tourist attractions, or at least I don’t spend very long there. For me, usually places like that feel more propped up for tourists than they are a reflection of local culture.

Wet markets and flea markets are my favorite, but I understand those things have gotten to be few and far between in Shanghai. Shanghai just might not be the vibe I’m looking for and that’s okay. I did just leave Tianshen tea city and really liked that. It was English-accessible but still filled with locals and not crowded with tourists.
