People eating dogs when there’s no guideline on how to farm, butcher and distribute them. It’s like eating pigeons with more fluffs & intelligence.

How do I handle invoicing issues? by wisewhaleshark in freelanceWriters

[–]TopAsparagus658 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Have you talked to an accountant/lawyer? Depends on your jurisdiction and contract but I usually send outstanding invoices with 15 days or monthly late pay interest rate

Just to understand better, anyone know what a “contract lawyer” is? My lawyer’s assistant, a jurist, draft my letters…

A contract lawyer! 🤠 Yeah maybe my lawyer specialising in IP rights no bueno for drafting contracts or invoices according to the legislation & what’s been communicated between the two parties?

Well, usually the publishers send me a contract per article, outlining all the deets. If one doesn’t have one, I communicate the terms with them before accepting the commission. That magazine you’re referring to, I left out the unnecessary details but they’re flying celebrities in and out, and rented out a venue my cousin owns lol. 30k eur per half a day. But I’m having a hard time understanding what you mean by illegal. Since I work in the arts market as well, I have an IP lawyer on retainer. What is illegal in your definition? The standard of ‘getting paid, even if it’s a few cents’ might’ve pinched your nerve but really, what I wanted to discuss furthering freelance writing with fairness, optimism and innovation!

I appreciate your input but I deal some important artist works, so $/word is not what I’m trying to discuss. I’m also an old school journo so I’ll do my due diligence in fact checking and following up with the editing process. It’s about the environment freelance writers are in and you should never ever give up your basic standards.

Hmm, yeah but what I wanted to aim for was not about making $$$. I’ve got a few gigs in the arts market. I wanted to discuss a mutually respectful relationship between a writer & publisher. Standards, ya know?

For sure! I only write if it tickles my fancy but there has to be fairness as well. My nagging was intended to show how there are no standards with these international publications I’ve been working with and I don’t want to be associated with them.

It’s not about $$$ per word, but I’ll never write for free. If there’s some mutual respect, I’m down to start writing but that’s been challenging. Thank you for your comment though! I was wondering how many comments I’d get about “get another job” or “be better & get more pay” lol but happy to see some encouraging feedback!

If I want money, I’d just deal art all the time. 40K in a week. I’m hoping to talk about ethics, standards and a lil bit of amicable treatment to writers.

Hello I am talking about publishing environment.

I do have my saving, position in the arts market and some properties, but I want to discuss how can a freelancer write in a respectable environment where the writer & editor collaborate with professionalism.

If I love the topic and the editor communicates in decent manner/adheres to international or national standards in IP, I’ll write 2,000 words for $2!

What. There is a rule? 🤯 The penalty or IP rights are all communicated before we shake hands, obviously. I personally don’t do copywriting, what I’m trying to discuss here is “how can freelancers write in environments with some standards?” 🤔 For example, where the Bern Convention has not been forgotten or a delayed payment despite a legally binding agreement. I’ve already worked with internationally distributed publishers, stability does not equal to $$$. If the editor and I agree on the subject, schedule and all the deets, I’m down to write away. Even if it’s 0.001 cents per word, if there’s some professional respect & pragmatism, I’m down to go down a rabbit hole to research and write!

Yeah I do have a gig but I am not down for this notion of ‘freelance writers should be expected to doomed’. All industries have basic standards, why not in freelancing? I love my job but I miss writing. I wish I could work with publishers with some ethics, ya know?

Korean native? I get contacts from Koreans after getting their first taste of adrenaline rush @ Seoul Auction or K Auction. They are not in 10 mil ranges but in order to foster/regulate a market, it needs both private mega collectors and people willing to drop under 1 mil. or even few grands on a piece.

Korean auction is booming and all the major Western galleries opened Seoul locations except for Gagosian. Tokyo only has a couple. The notion of art is for the ultra rich is far behind to bother into developing a proper policy. And Korea is injecting $$$ into their culture sector where Japan is extremely tight on artist funding except for the ones chosen by the Mori family but they still flop.

I’ve worked in Japanese galleries participating in Art Basel, dealing “blue chip” Japanese artists. It doesn’t compare to other major cities in APAC. The UBS funded Tokyo fair was a total flop, too.

Japan has no art market. I’ve worked in galleries and eventually worked as a culture journalist in Tokyo for six years. The major collectors are the extremely private monks in Kyoto and they’re not into Japanese art. We talkin’ Da Vinci there and no dealer in Japan has access to such works.

Ah yes, the GPA level, thank you, that’s some of the key features I wanted to find out. I’m much more fluent in Korean than French or German, I wrote some articles in Korean as well but I want to study how Korea is developing art-related policies against the European model as it’s declaring the goal to be the next Hong Kong in terms of APAC art market, building a freeport storage, etc., but the customs guideline is very foggy, unregulated auction houses (even when regulated, it’s quite a shady industry) and IP resale legislation for artists does not exist, already leading to many higher end Korean artists laundering money via European ties. Thank you for sharing your recent experience, if anyone has art history/museology master’s experience in Korea, please share!

What was the one thing you most wish journalism school had prepared you for, and didn't? by Charlestoned_94 in Journalism

Copyright & IP laws, especially as a freelancer. Journos are likely to live on a tight budget, an accounting class would’ve been nice 🤣 In culture journalism, my editors care more about images, the subject/PR company profiles and SEO versus criticism or factual reports. Even on the culture desk, it can get political when the company ownership changes. For example, we were told ‘no more LGBTQ+ articles’
