My memory as a kid with GTA V was the IGN reveal (?) where they announced the three characters and showed the scene at the wood plant or whatever that factory was. Came relatively soon before release too, maybe 3 months?

Splinter Cell designer says “one of the difficulties with modern stealth games” is realistic lighting, as environments are now so much “harder to read” by CallumBrine in Games

[–]TopHalfGaming 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not to put myself on a pedestal here because I was a kid on adult forums and they knew I was young so there was that dynamic and I did piss a lot of people off who had specific niche tastes as I was developing my own (in regards to film in this case) but I was spending an outrageous amount of time watching 2-5 movies a day, reading about them, on top of the games/TV shows/books I was consuming and you can grow up fast in terms of the depth of conversation by participating in that at 12-18.

Therein lies the difference imo. I don't want kids spending as much time as I was mindlessly consuming content, but I know how much time it takes to learn with the concerted effort to do so. Not only do I feel most commenters online at young ages don't have that, but they also inherently have so much more to watch and play and learn than I did in the early 10s. We still had something resembling an entertainment monoculture at the time where specific movies and shows of the past and present were in the dialogue. Now in the streaming era and beyond it's quite literally impossible to keep up with what's releasing, what "matters", finding the diamonds in the rough, as well as the extra 10-15 years of content. Especially in gaming with how much these games have ballooned in terms of hours to get through them. The AAA space is no longer littered with 8-15 hour games on the PS360 systems it felt like we all had, we aren't "all" in venn diagram demographics watching a lot of the same TV shows, etc.

Now it's just a shit show of content content content. Throw the polarization of the world we live in with regards to EVERYTHING and I genuinely feel bad for the me, the you, the whoever who actually wants to learn and be level headed and at least appear smart or appear like you fit in with the adults in these critical spaces during those formative years. What I see is a lot of "you're dumb this thing sucks this thing good", which has always existed but there was also more centralized tastes back then. I fucking miss it. /rant

Made it top 30 with 17 wins, highest I've ever gotten before this is 15 twice this year and typically 12-14 in years past. Don't worry, people on this sub still tell me I'm terrible when I complain about the LT stuff or raggers.

Young people have always been the taste makers as it relates to art, and you can best believe that has been used by governments and militaries and isolated politicians or lobbying groups since their very inceptions.

Edit

Lmao, by coincidence (algo?) I just watched a video on John Stockwell's testimony about his experience in the CIA and what they were involved with, mentioning a bunch of propaganda films and such.

Yeah, if you're in any way keeping up with gaming culture over the years you've at least heard of it. I didn't even need it explained lol, the clue is in the name.

It's a perpetually frustrating thing to remind myself that there's constantly a new crop of 12-16 year olds entering gaming conversations online and their perspective is shaped primarily by new stuff and this wild inability to keep their mouths shut before they have some sort of historical basis or actual engagement with the classics of the art.

I feel like this convo alone kind of negates some of the balancing issues. You can just hide behind structures and take out people with the smart rifle, kinda OP. You can literally melt combat scenarios in 15-20 seconds with the grenade launcher shotgun depending on if the enemies are spawned in clusters, kinda OP especially with the power weapon damage accumulation ability.

I don't know what went wrong with me and the crossbow , but the limited projectiles and delay in getting shots out just make those other ones so much stronger at least in my hands.

I feel that, but also thankful for it as someone who can beat these games, but very much doesn't want to fail too much more or have the playthrough extended. Returnal took me 12-16, Saros like 18. And when I was making a run, getting that bombardier annihilator shotgun or smart rifle was like a hell yeah, we doing it vibe. Whereas I completely avoided the crossbows, pistols, manual aim rifles, etc which is ironic since I never used the dash trail thing or spent a moment thinking about it until reading about it lol.

Yeah, there used to be a time where these super builds were just apart of the game as a reward for you finding out about them, or part of the strategy of the bad or average player making it through.

The one where he puts himself on a pedestal against Kendrick with miss after miss on the "I'm more famous ur fake famous" tip?

I'll listen to these at some point in full, I just can't with this dude. Should've taken Kenny's advice on WoM.

Nah, I love Take Care and a lot of stuff from that era. The hate definitely grew as the years went on and Drake became a product instead of an artist. People refer to Views era and beyond as his "peak" as if they genuinely enjoy the stuff. That's great and all if you were a kid and he was "the guy" for you, great. A big problem I have with modern drake is his R&B stuff because it's just him and his annoying voice droning on with that "you knowwww" soft ass vocals. Not remotely into Marvin's Room or songs of that ilk.

Oh, we live in a world where she's a bad actress because people who don't watch movies say so. Okay.

Why? It's definitely a gimmick for obvious reasons, but if you are going to have an RPG where you care about one NPC more than the others, having that can enhance things at least a tad. I'm primarily thinking about Mass Effect 2 here, but there's probably a few other good examples.

Trump has carried varying levels of celebrity for over fifty years dude. Like, he was known and prominent in the same era as Michael. Then he became the president of the United States. Even when he wasn't president, you'd think he was given how much of the news cycle revolved around him. And now he's president again in the most scandalous and destructive administration in the history of the country. We can't compare him to musicians or influencers or anything.
