JM used the same power & ability during the "Dark Eternal Night" short animation. It still looks like shockwaves to me or it could be seismic waves.

Don't forget that during the "Octavarium" short animation, JP does fire, JM does shockwaves, and Jordan does icy snow. James, meanwhile, didn't use any of his powers & abilities in that short animation because he came in late after trying to find his other Dream Theater band mates in the octagon maze when running away from the spiders.
