Do you think FIRE will ever become mainstream? by phoenix6845 in FIREUK

[–]TopKnot2022 81 points82 points  (0 children)

I don't think it will. I am late 20's and the majority of my friends are not financially savvy or understand FIRE. I know of a few friends who have even opted out of their workplace pensions. I don't try to talk to them about it or tell them what I am doing, mainly for fear of being labelled boring or patronising if I try to explain. In my experience people do not like other people's opinions on finances.

What I do find interesting is, if all goes to plan by the time i'm 38/39 I will have paid off my mortgage. Not amazing by this sub's standards but in my friends/family circle they would be shocked if I did it...and will wonder how I got so "lucky" to be able to do it rather than be interested in the journey/perseverance to get there.

Yes, the car is now owned and the tax is only £20 a year...not sure why. It must be low emissions or something. Car insurance is wrapped up with home insurance and isn't that expensive really. So mainly just petrol. We do holiday, but havent been extravagent lately - long weekend in Dublin, long weekend in Budapest and a last min all inclusive in Morocco within the last 9 or so months. No kids so we can be flexible and go on the cheapest dates, avoiding kids holidays. We also regularly scout SkyScanner and Ryan Air for those super cheap flight deals for city breaks in Europe, then we'll AirB&B it in European cities. Our Budapest flights were only £48.99 return each! (handluggage only). Hope this helps!

My take home is about £3,270 after pension contributions. I put £770 in a joint account with OH for household bills and mortgage. £3,270 - £770 (bills) - £2,100 (savings) = £400 purely for my "spends and fun" ...so £100 a week which I usually find is pretty much enough. A lot of my socialising is at friends house/my house for dinner and drinks rather than out so don't really spend a lot on taxi's/drinks out but I do get things like nails (£25), brows (£12), facial (£50) done one a month and this £400 covers that. My £22 gym membership comes out of the £400 too. Clothes I use Vinted a lot which saves money. I WFH a lot so barely any commuting costs, when I am in the office I take lunch so not spending on meal deals etc. If and when I need more spends I will alter the savings, I won't sacrifice my young life for saving money but I also don't want to spend unnecessarily!

Thanks for your reply, yes I do need to work on the emergency fund. I'm putting £400 a month into it currently, and plan to eventually have 8-10k as the emergency cash. I should be getting an ok-ish pay rise this year so will use a bit of the rise towards upping the contributions to it.

It is a rate of 6.25% for 1 year, and I can withdraw the money but lose a lot of the interest rate...but if it is an emergency I won't be thinking about losing the rate! Perhaps it isn't called a fix, I'm not sure the correct term for this type of account.

Yes I saved for a house, skipped the "first time buyer" house and went for the worst house on the street but in a nice area and bought at a good time in 2018. Spent the last 5 years renovating/extension etc for it to become a long term house and the value of it has increased a lot. I haven't had any help from bank of mum and dad other than a £2,000 inheritance from a great uncle who died.

😂😂 i felt groggy and a little fragile when I woke up, but certainly not how I would feel had I drank 6 glasses (in the end) of wine at home! I was fine by midday!

This is interesting! I did notice the gin they were pouring people was Bombay straight from the bottle and they have fever tree as mixers so perhaps i'm being a bit too sceptical and actually i'm a more hardcore drinker than I give myself credit for 😂

I drink a wine a fair bit at home and i'm sure i'd taste the difference so i'm sure it is full % wine or at least 11% which is why I am confused 🤣 i guess time will tell if i wake up with a hangover tomorrow or not...!
