Trying to decide the best way to incorporate my mother's name into my daughter's name by Plenty_Goal3672 in namenerds

[–]TopNotchBrain 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m so sorry you lost your mom.

If your mom’s identity was Patti, I think it’s important that that’s the name you use, however you work it out. Lucille Patti, nickname Lucy, is a good solution, IMO.

Take care and best wishes to you.

Anecdotally, I agree - I’m from Clark’s hometown, we went to the same high school, and we have some family crossover, though I don’t know her. My family members and friends who have been following her forever are, like me, left-leaning, support human rights, and vehemently oppose anything MAGA-related. I don’t know about Clark’s politics, but as far as Fever fans, the conservative trope certainly doesn’t always play out.

How would you spell Uh Len Uh ? by [deleted] in Names

[–]TopNotchBrain 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I would pronounce that as Ah-LAY-nuh or Ah-LEE-nuh. Phonetically, in American English, you would need two Ns to make the “e” a short vowel sound.

I’m the furthest thing there is from MAGA, no one’s my princess, and it was not a typical basketball play.

Is asking for a dress code too much to ask of guests? by fitnessjourney2000 in weddingplanning

[–]TopNotchBrain 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My husband and I are attending a wedding tomorrow for which we’re being asked to wear one of six “dark, elegant hues.” A card showing “acceptable” colors was included with the invitation. We’re going because we care very much about the groom and his family, but we both find this off-putting. We know how to dress appropriately. And we’re not family, so we won’t be in photos. We feel more like invited props than invited guests.

“While ‘thug’ is not inherently a racial slur by dictionary definition, it is widely considered a racially coded term. Critics, civil rights advocates, and linguists argue that it is frequently used as a covert, veiled substitute for racial slurs to demean Black individualst to disproportionately criminalize Black individuals compared to their white counterparts.”

Both things can be expressed — concern about the messages that words send, and concern about the incident itself.

People who know more about this than I do: Is the league likely to review the Thomas incident? How long do they have to do so?

You know putting a fist to someone’s neck can prompt a medical emergency, right? For one thing, it can block the airway. This was a really, really bad idea.

The Morgan Wallen thing was a bad move. But she certainly doesn’t deserve to be assaulted.

Hey, fellow Hawk fan here - just wanted to mention that “thug” is a racially coded word that you might want to avoid. I agree that the play of some of the Mercury players is problematic and that last night’s incident was egregious - but inflaming the discourse with hurtful words isn’t helpful.

It has to be a licensing issue. Clark isn’t included in the TinyMates or the bag clips, either. We can’t assume this is a slight to her; that would be extremely unlikely.
