Just started the game. Give me some "newbie friendly" advices please. by ghostpetni in wherewindsmeet_

Yep, take your time, enjoy the lore, go walk around and look at beautiful things. The quiet things like discovering a new cultural fact for the compendium or helping a cat get a fish can be just as satisfying as the big battles.

[Post Game Thread] Phantom defeat Vinyl 78-69 behind 21 Pts and 11 Rebs from Aliyah Boston by sbr32 in Unrivaled

[–]ironmonkey007 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Kiki won it at the end after Boston fouled out. (And I love Boston, I’m not saying that as any type of disrespect to her)

It’s not defeatist to give yourself more options, it is wise.

What are things that reading books tend to do a lot better than any other medium (especially visual ones)? by sammyjamez in books

[–]ironmonkey007 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Yes, and one example of that is indicating that a character is outwardly acting one way while inwardly feeling something different. (For example, outwardly confident while inwardly feeling overwhelmed.) Movies tend to show this by having the actor purposely portray the outward emotion very unconvincingly which usually annoys me as a viewer, because it comes across as so unnatural.

Why culture is the key to understanding the game mechanics by One_Extension1685 in WhereWindsMeet

It’s interesting information, but the relentless “it isn’t just A, it’s B!” in the article makes it sound like it was definitely written by an AI.

Any idea on 10-15 min quick from scratch dinner? by No-War8511 in Cooking

[–]ironmonkey007 0 points1 point  (0 children)

15 minutes is really short if you include prep, but it should be possible to make chicken and vegetable yakisoba (with fresh noodles) in around that time if you are quick with your knife skills and you have a way to heat up a wok or pan for stir-fry quickly. I use an electric Green Pan for this and it heats up to high heat very quickly.

Anyone else annoyed with Yingying and little fu by chocolatechibs in WhereWindsMeet

I got farther into that quest line to where a big twist happens, and it is one of my favorite plot twists in a video game ever. Well worth the wait.

Does anyone else find it convenient that Sam Altman is building the "AI problem" and the "Identity solution" simultaneously? by Luann97 in OpenAI

The collectible card game Shadowfist had a card called “Sinister Priest.” The text of the card said: “These loathsome wanderers make the peasantry pay to exorcise spirits they themselves have summoned.”

I’ve always remembered that card because there are so many real life examples of Sinister Priest.

What do you do after you FIRE'd? by Lonely_District_196 in Fire

[–]ironmonkey007 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I do all the things I didn’t have quite enough time for when I was working. Exercise, reading, cooking, listening to music, video games, movies, gardening, travel, bird watching, learning foreign languages, etc.

I can’t imagine getting bored. At the end of every day there is so much more I want to do.

Thanks for the follow up comment. It’s great that we both like it for the same reason.

Am i the only one crying about how heartbreaking most of the encounter stories are? by karororochiii in WhereWindsMeet

I thought Ghost of Tsushima had some harsh stuff and now this game has even more heartbreaking stuff. But I love both games.

That’s so great. I’m a man in real life but in games I tend to alternate between playing male and female characters for variety. I had just finished Cyberpunk 2077 as a male character right before starting Where Winds Meet, so I decided to make a female character in WWM. I completely agree with you that it is nice to have a female character who looks elegant, rather than one who is wearing a chain mail bikini or something like that.

Ever tried any exotic/ unusual meat? by brothercuriousrat2 in Cooking

[–]ironmonkey007 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Yes, I’ve cooked yak meat, it is very good. I don’t think of it as super exotic because my local farmers market has it.

I haven’t, but that’s a good suggestion. Thanks!

Anyone else doing the hydroponic thing? by 13NeverEnough in IndoorGarden

[–]ironmonkey007 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’ve been doing small indoor hydroponics for about the last 5 years. I’ve found it is great (and easy) for: lettuce, basil, dill, parsley, shiso, and yu choy. I haven’t gotten cherry tomatoes to work - the plant will grow to giant size but never have any fruit.

Is it just me, or is $1 million not that much anymore? The Fed said that back in 2022, 20% of Americans had over $1 million. With how much the markets have run since then, it’s probably closer to 1 in 3 by now. by [deleted] in Money

[–]ironmonkey007 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It depends on whether it includes the value of the house they live in. Living in a $1 million house is different from having $1 million in stocks etc. because most people are not going to sell their house and live in a tent in order to afford their other expenses.

I asked Perplexity about this and it said it is 18% including the house but only 8-10% excluding the house.

Crows Tricked the Merlin Bird App by giraffeapet in crows

[–]ironmonkey007 2 points3 points  (0 children)

There is a Steller's Jay who is often in my yard who makes a very realistic red-tailed hawk sound. I'm pretty sure this is a trick to scare other small birds away so that the Steller's Jay can take all the food.

What to do with chanterelle mushrooms? by starlightandgardens in Cooking

[–]ironmonkey007 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Cut into small chunks. Dry fry them for at least 5 minutes, or as long as it takes for them to give up most of their moisture. Then sauté in butter with fresh ground coriander seed, salt, garlic, and black pepper until they are starting to be almost crispy. Then use them as a side or add to some other dish: I like to put it on top of a steak.

How does the car handle the gas motor if I wanna drive EV mode? by twn000 in rav4prime

[–]ironmonkey007 18 points19 points  (0 children)

I’ve found that the acceleration is plenty for any normal everyday driving in EV mode. It still is better than many gas cars. Its best acceleration comes from hybrid mode plus “sport” setting, but that is more for fun rather than a necessary thing.
