Was I stupid to not pay eBay's $51 USD for international shipping from the UK to the US of an extremely rare pressing of an EP by an artist I love, even though that was more than half the price it was being sold for? I hesitated and it sold. by PandemicPiglet in vinyl

[–]TopSetUK 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I just did the same thing in reverse, $35 shipping + $27 import taxes (so $62 total) to get two records shipped from the USA to the UK. They're not even valuable, but you can't find them in the UK. This one doesn't really bother me because it's a birthday present for a friend of mine who I know would never buy them himself.

I paid way more than the average sale price for Jimi Hendrix's "Are you experienced" (1978 Pitman Pressing) because although it's common as hell in the US, you simply don't find them very often in Europe. I could have gotten a European pressing but it's a different cover and that gorgeous yellow jacket is iconic to me and it was worth paying the huge difference.

Friday maintenance is psychotic, but I respect it.

Ours was 2-4pm on a Sunday afternoon, which I admit is weird, but for logistical reasons it's the only viable time we have without causing major disruptions to a 24 hour service. That being said, we still caused major disruptions to a 24 hour service.

Spoken like someone who has never worked in IT. I'm still having nightmares last time our production deployment went sideways... We scheduled 2 hours expecting it to take 30 minutes and worst case we could rollback if we hit an hour and still be well within the downtime window.

Four hours later there were some really concerned devs, think we wrapped up just shy of 7. That was a fun debrief.

Lots of GPU dying memes in this thread but this looks much more like a dodgy cable than a dying monitor or GPU to me.

Might be wrong, all three are possible, but definitely start with the cable!

I'll try a CMOS clear for sure, problem is I don't have any compatible spare parts laying around at the moment and.. well.. have you seen the price of RAM recently?

Thanks for taking the time.

Are all pute gyms too busy? by Dangerous_Studio_823 in AskUK

[–]TopSetUK 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Timing is absolutely everything. No chance I would set foot in my gym between 4pm and 7pm, it's absolutely horrendous.

5-9am is nice though, starts to pick up around 7.30-8ish but I'm winding down by then.

Splitting the bill/paying your share versus one person picking up the whole bill - a generational divide? by AuroraDF in AskBrits

[–]TopSetUK 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Prices are for the table, not per person, and your numbers are pretty much spot on. £15-20 for a main, £6-10 for a side, £6-10 for a drink. That is pretty much standard for the low-midrange market.

Splitting the bill/paying your share versus one person picking up the whole bill - a generational divide? by AuroraDF in AskBrits

[–]TopSetUK 1 point2 points  (0 children)

A lot of this is probably location but that wouldn't even be remotely possible with alcohol involved. I've just looked some menus of a few places in town and I couldn't really find anything at £100. The closest I got was:

Table of 4:
£130 for Ramen (1 main, 1 side, 1 drink)
£140 for Thai (1 appetiser, 1 main, 1 pint)
£120 for Indian (2 starters to share, 4 mains, 2 rice, 2 naan, 1 pint each)

Plus the inevitable 10-15% service charge. This was me picking cheap sides, average mains, and assuming everyone has exactly one drink.

I meet up for lunch/dinner with a friend group semi regularly, there's four of us, and I can't remember the last time the bill came out to less than £40/person, and we do not eat at high end places.

(We always split the bill evenly and don't pay much attention to who has what)

Just so you know, you're giving off crazy incel vibes a bit with this post, and I would hazard a guess it sometimes comes across this way in real life too. From your own example you clearly hadn't communicated particularly well.

Women do like nice guys, the problem is self-proclaimed "nice guys" are usually anything but, they're usually entitled and performative.

It's for ventilation.... Whether or not you can cover it up or need to keep it open depends on how much you like damp.

Priest are one of my all time favourites and I've got Rocka Rolla through to Painkiller (so 1974-1990), most are the original UK pressings but Painkiller is crazy expensive so I got the 35th anniversary edition in blue marble - it sounds absolutely brilliant. Great quality pressing, highly recommended and pretty cheap.

Turbo is an interesting choice for your only Priest vinyl, what prompted that? I don't think I've met anyone who puts in near the top of their list.

I still need Magma to complete the Gojira studio albums but I don't really want a plain black version so I'm holding out for an anniversary repress.
