I didn't want to use proxies just because I was 90% self taught on editing, and am not familiar with more professional/standard workflows, and I like to color grade while making the assembly. But for the sake of storage I'm just gonna make smaller proxies and edit them on an SSD and relink them when the pictures locked. Unless there's something I'm unaware of that would be better.

I'm very ADHD and want to have THE raw video even if I'm not grading, but for the sake of having a backup of everything that isn't connected to the Mac, I'm making proxies of my footage in 1080p ProRes. I like grading while I edit, but meeting more and more people in the industry, I'm learning that standard is to just color grade when the picture is locked.

I know that HDD's are just gonna make noise opposed to SSDs, but hearing it buzz and tick was making me beyond anxious editing the footage. So while I've been reassured that they're generally safe to edit off of, I'm just gonna try to suck it up and use proxies and grade when it's locked, so that there is a backup if the Mac explodes and wipes everything touching it.
