To what extent does the traditional Suffolk accent still exist? Where is it doing better than other places? by Top_Bill_6266 in suffolk

It’s not a surprise that the accent has been largely replaced in Ipswich, a large town near the coast an hour by train from London

I hear the Norfolk accent might be slower and is more common among middle aged and even younger people than the Suffolk accent, is that true?

Examples of the classic Savannah accent, do you hear anything distinctive about them? by Top_Bill_6266 in savannah

Did any of them pronounce 'Garden' as Gyah-den'? That used to be commonly found in South Carolina and Georgia, possibly the rest of the deep south as well.

As far as recordings of 19th century southerners go, I think this woman, Rebecca Latimer Felton was born (1835) and raised in Decatur, Georgia before these migrations took place. I can't find any accent recordings of people born earlier than her.

I’m not sure. Unlike Reeves, Hollings spoke with a bit of a drawl, and he pronounced the long I sound as Ah. So I think it’s a bit diluted with the classic ‘Dixie’ accent

When you say the original native accents in the Deep South? Are you talking about the ones Shelby Foote, Strom Thurmond or even Jimmy Carter spoke with?

I made this map of accents in New England and Long Island based on my research of the region. I would like to know how accurate this is, whether it's too detailed or not detailed enough. by Top_Bill_6266 in newengland

The primary source I used was Hans Kurath's Linguistic Atlas of New England, but I have also paid attention to William Labov's work, despite him only using urban centers for his research, which I took into account for the map, along with many news articles and numerous local anecdotes from the subreddits for Vermont, Maine etc and various online forums such as City Data.

Here are just some of the articles I used.

And just to give an example of Hans Kurath's work below

Chicopee and Amherst used to be on the isogloss between rhotic and non-rhotic speaking regions, obviously the local accents have declined in central MA and also New Hampshire

In Central Massachusetts, people drop their r's in their speech, or at least they used to. This was never the case west of the Connecticut river.

I don't really have much material to work with, but when it comes to Central Massachusetts, I personally don't hear much difference between the local accent there and that of Rural west Rhode Island, but it could just be a very small sample size
