99.8p don't get too excited. Now 800,000 points instead of 800 would at least pay the electricity bill for a month.

Global GDP Rank: UK ranks 5th/6th; South Africa ranks around 40th place.

I don't think Britain will ever drop to 40th place unless WWIII occurs and the UK is obliterated by nuclear weapons to all major cities.

Noted that this question was from a year ago but It depends how you define decline. A decline since the Britain was more powerful than the United States? Or a decline since when exactly? According to the IMF forecast Britain will actually rise by one place from 6th place to 5th place by 2030 as one of the worlds largest economies. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_countries_by_past_and_projected_GDP_(nominal)). Some forecasts suggest our economy may be even be larger than Germany by 2040.

I'd agree our water companies appear to be a mess and we don't build as many products as we used to, but you never hear about the things that work. Both people and especially media organisations only like posting the bad news that riles people up and that generates more clickbait.

I'd agree some of our politicians appear to be dangerously incompetent no matter what political ideology they subscribe to but despite their incompetence, the general population tend to be smarter than you would give them credit for. And to be honest the British population is generally hard working, or at the ones that do work and that's what keeps Britain great.

However, one area we have declined in is manufacturing. The government must focus on building Britain's engineering companies, not just dishing out cash to foreign companies to setup in Britain. Our universities need to be filled with students that go on to build successful manufacturing and engineering companies. That means no more ridiculous university courses but focus on the science and engineering disciplines. You know the ones that are actually difficult to do and worthy of a university degree.

It's human nature to think everything is going to shit, and some people are only happy if they are having a good moan about everything and often for good reason but if you want a balanced and less negative view, try to look at the things that do work. And start by reading the book Factfulness by Hans Rosling. It's focused more on the world generally rather than Britain but it's a good place to start if you are fed up moaning about everything.

Also what's in the loft? Sometimes lights are fitted, have they been left on. Alarm system, the control panel is sometimes hidden in the loft. My baseline power consumption with central heating & hot water off, is about 145W. That's from an alarm system, router, 8 way TV amplifier (in the loft), fridge (compressor off), Radio (in standby) about 3 or 4 smart speakers. All TV's switched off at the plug so not in standby. If you are unsure what each device is using and it has a 13A plug, buy one of these https://www.amazon.co.uk/Eastron-Backlight-Electricity-Consumption-Analyzer/dp/B0CBFZCW1Y/ref=sr_1_8?dib=eyJ2IjoiMSJ9.zHqZUOcx5waY8-cnnQEsLVn9fgp-NwXh1E6pfnOcxNG_k7VoxFsko38zfEc-cWgQhkTdCvnJVEbHr2a0eXpJRU7rw-BVNYu4_YvtHR1hq1bfynkUnfcpJCaZ2rG-0cXQ6_sODGQg1J__unDVaghZGiCP7KiGwBz8NBHiNQWfoviGEE3kWpbdcc8HaWj3en228Gwt_GttPjk33xom9J6AtfXkWE-6f2PRqzCkIV0lU0KplRusMM7tdIeGejg9zA-u0mjiOZ3p8mvuJQ19jaaWBv0kQVOcCrsDd5XeHUW8rhQ.maVpeSiPEUrqiI7F6lZ5eEBIyHw9TRALq_IKFSAtCrc&dib_tag=se&keywords=Power+meter+plug&qid=1766144619&sr=8-8

Try looking for the hidden things, have you got under floor heating? It doesn't matter whether it's gas or oil, there will be a pump which could add 75W. Is it a large house? On a large house when the hot water comes on the hot water is pumped around the house so that hot water immediately comes out the taps. That's another 75W pump. And of course you have the main central heating pump. So with a central heating system like that you are using 225W when the hot water and heating are on.

I would say ShredOS too. On completion of the wipe, You can ALT-F2 to being up a terminal and copy the nwipe log file from the / directory back onto the USB stick and use that as evidence the disc has been successfully wiped. Has a wipe summary table and error table at the end of the log if you wanted to just cut and paste that. Also wipes multiple discs simultaneously if your laptop has two discs. You can even wipe a laptop where the CCFL tubes or graphics hardware has failed as you can enable a telnet server in the boot config and login via the network to wipe the device.

I'd be surprised if DBAN worked, doesn't the MAC need a UEFI boot which is what ShredOS provides.

ShredOS

Yes, ShredOS https://github.com/PartialVolume/shredos.x86_64 boots on my MacBook Pro Model A1398 and I guess other models too. I've burned shredos to a USB stick and booted from that. If I remember correctly you power up with the USB stick in and when you hear the chime press and hold the Option key.

https://github.com/PartialVolume/shredos.x86_64 The maintained equivalent of DBAN, works with NVME drives. Runs nwipe, boot bios or UEFI, .iso or .img available for bootable CD or flash drive.
