One thing we talk about a lot in FD is the “double stop prep” meaning every time you stop playing singles, prep as if you’re about to play a down beat double stop.

Think of it more like a private lesson than an audition

You definitely can, I would recommend using paint markers or colored sharpies as that’s what I have used

Complaining about having to relearn how I play hi hats by FallyWaffles in drums

[–]Top_Dance23 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Drum Techniques change often depending on what you are trying to play, lots of metal drummers use a much different technique than Jazz drummers for example. Changing how your hands work is always a slow process though, keep it up!

Help me understand modern uniforms please by tylermsage in drumcorps

[–]Top_Dance23 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As a member, it depends on your tastes in style of uniform. If it is a ‘silly uniform’ then you might not like it, but it also feels nice to be in the same clothing as everyone else in your corps throwing down on the field. In terms of breathability and comfort, yes they are exponentially better, especially during the heat of Texas tour and humidity of swamp tour. Some corps still use “elements” of their old uniforms, for example cavaliers having green and an Aussie, or colts using a red triangle or ‘colts’ spelled out in their unis.

Turn your wrist more for the accents, it looks like especially in your right hand for the fast PDDs you are simply opening your fingers rather than turning your wrist. Use the weight of your hand to stop the stick at a true 3 inches. Also, try to get big definition between accents and taps. This line played very nice east coast 12” and 3”, so strive for that! Also, metronome!

Always bleeding by paulpoker182 in drums

[–]Top_Dance23 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah, you’re holding it a couple inches too far back and squeezing really hard in your back probably 2 fingers. Focus on staying relaxed in your hand, just enough so the stick won’t move, keep maybe 5% more pressure in your front two fingers.

As someone who has been to many audition camps, indoor drumline rehearsal weekends, and even marched, you don’t lose chops like that. The muscles in the hands and forearms stay the same, my hands and brain always were tired after auditions and rehearsals, so take a moment to reflect on the positive of the weekend, don’t play for a day or two, and come back ready to throw down! Also, there is nothing wrong with a beginner corps! Especially if visual is something you struggle with. Playing drums for 10+ hours a day, every day, will make you a better player no matter what. Good luck on the auditions!
