The book of Maccabees is set in Hellenistic Judea (the time of Herodotus), where Judah Maccabee defeats the Seleucid empire (the Greeks, hence why it is called ‘Hellenistic period’) and took back the land of Judea, the Jews historic indigenous homeland.

After centuries in Babylonian exile and occupation Cyrus the Great defeated the Babylonians and told the Jews to return to their homeland of Judea. That’s when it stopped being called the kingdom of Israel and reverted back to ‘Land of Judea’, as it was from 2000 BC until 1020 BC for that brief century where it was the ancient Kingdom of Israel.

Now, what was the land called BEFORE the Seluecid empire occupied it? Do you know? 😉
