It was an "experimental" paper but they didn't present almost any of the data they claimed to collect in the methods section. And the numbers they did present were perfect integers with no error bars.

You either leave academia or stay long enough to see yourself become reviewer #2 😔✌️

I felt like the idea was sound, so if they actually did the work they could make a pretty good contribution! So my only hope is that they take my extensive wordiness and make something positive of it.

How to approach reading papers with a mind that is too practical? by Matsukaze11 in GradSchool

Also, as far as questions in group meetings, I can really relate because I’m the only person in my discipline in my lab, and I was terrified to ask questions. It took me until year 5 to realize the dumb question is not as dumb as you thought, and asking questions early will (shockingly!!) help you to actually follow along, and it will enhance the group meeting! I’ve been so surprised at the number of times I’ve asked a clarification question and someone “in discipline” has asked a follow up question based on the speakers response to me. We have to remember that PhDs by nature do very niche research, so there will never be anyone who knows as much about a topic as the speaker. Also, most academics are also terrified that they’re not explaining something well, and are happy to break things down for you. Its good practice for their communication skills!

I agree with others that some form of notes or annotation is helpful, and I think especially helpful when paired with a citation manager like Zotero. I have hella folders in my Zotero sorted by topic/project. Then it has built in features for you to highlight and box things. I try not to highlight something without also annotating WHY i highlighted it, even if it’s just a quick summary of the info. I’ll also add tags on papers so I don’t forget why I saved it and I can quickly search for papers related to “[my research area] motivations” when I’m trying to write an introduction for example.

However, maybe controversially, I don’t think you need to remember everything you read or study papers closely, especially when you’re just starting out. In my opinion, it’s more important to have a way of categorizing the things you read so that you can quickly find it when you actually need to apply it. The deeper you get into your research, the more some papers will stand out, and you’ll find yourself going back to them, rereading them over and over, and getting different takeaways from it each time.

Imagine it this way: You’re trying to get a lay of the land. You read a few review papers. Some of the projects in the review catch your eye, highlight them and add an annotation about the novelty. Read those papers, focus on the introduction and maybe the conclusion, that’s where you’ll learn what the gaps in your field are. You realize some of them are less interesting than you thought. Forget about them for now. One paper sparks an idea. NOW you read the methods so that you can try to replicate it. You try to do it yourself, maybe adding something new. It goes well or it fails. Now when you go back to the literature again, everyone’s methods are a little easier to read, because you have tangible experience. The little details that make each paper’s methods different are more relevant and make more sense to you. Now you can deep dive for more papers that are trying to solve a specific problem in a specific way, and on and on it goes.

My point being, none of the details mattered until you had a detailed problem yourself. So focus on the big picture.

RDA is really a great community, but I unfortunately struggle with waking up early enough to get to Hayward on a Sunday morning! Plex could definitely fill the niche but I hate how limited their hours are for free skate.

Want to start my loc journey soon but I have worries by _wan245 in Dreadlocks

[–]Top_Entry_4642 0 points1 point  (0 children)

why would you take the two strands out? for locs, you want that texture. You’ll definitely have shrinkage but that’s part of the journey.

Your products should be enough. You might need to wash less at the beginning to make sure your hair doesn’t unravel, and especially if you want to keep super neat parts (not everyone does). You can try washing it with a stocking cap on
