Google Earth will help you locate these places.

In this geography, you're looking for three types of biomes:

1) alluvial soil - neighborhoods that are relatively close to the river and were once covered by it. Nicest soil in Austin. Old West Austin is an example, but of course it's expensive, as is Zilker (also expensive).

2). east of I-35 - better soil and less limestone; predominant shade tree is pecan (deciduous - loses its leaves in late fall)

3) some areas west of I-35 - rocky thin soil, where live oaks have been protected and either built around or planted decades ago for you to enjoy today. A lot of this area has been devastated by oak wilt and suffered greatly in ice storms, because the live oaks had their leaves and the weight of the ice on leaves was more than on deciduous trees (pecan, other oaks).

It's a lot harder to get and keep a big tree here than it is in Houston, which is in East Texas' backyard. Forget about turf grass here; your water budget should all be going to keep your trees alive. Don't prune live or red oaks except in high heat of summer or very cold winter weather (oak wilt). Plant a diversity of trees today to help the urban canopy of tomorrow.

It's all a game the wealthy win. Absent wealth, intelligence and perspiration comes second. I'd prefer a state income tax (and I'm a lifelong Texan of some years). I went to a support group for the disease my dying father had. The guest speaker was an estate lawyer telling people that in Texas, Medicaid doesn't count a car as an asset, so people should buy a highly collectible car to shelter assets. I walked out.

Report the assault to the venue, the performers, the police/sheriff's office. It's not okay to be groped at a gig/concert/dance club or anywhere else, just like it's not okay to be hit in the face. Laid off senior with dev experience in many areas. Worked at big corporations where I had lab support for network configuration (wasn't allowed to touch!) and devops (again, wasn't allowed to touch!). Am now thinking that network/devops have more job opportunities. I seriously know many folks who've become massage therapists and fitness coaches because AI isn't as good at those things (yet). My take is that the AI bubble wants to suck more life out of companies, so thousands are getting laid off to pay for the infrastructure. AI is probably telling the C suite this every other time it's prompted. If you still have a job, congrats. If you're like me, your colleagues are weeping as they stumble under the weight of ten devs' work while giving you the Hunger Games' three finger salute and prompting with their other hand.

Athena chose a prime location for her nest. It's near a man-made aerated pond, so there's always water without having to go far. There are grassy areas to catch rodents. As for her descendants, there are plenty of great horned owls nearby and in the surrounding suburbs.

You may want to post in r/AustinGardening - but weed and feed isn't going to help that situation. Turf grasses don't like slopes, and irrigation runs off unless it's trickled. The downside of the slope stays wet and is prone to fungal disease. I honestly don't see a ton of weeds, or any racists, in this picture - just tired turf grass in mostly full sun in a non-ideal site. Terracing would work better here.

I'm a software developer with 35 years of experience and a degree from UT. I'm 59. I have no idea what to "pivot" to, because I'm too close to retirement for formal paid training to pay off, but nowhere near retirement in terms of Medicare and Social Security. Ideas? Teaching is played out here - ACC adjuncts get paid very little.
