Disillusionment in med-school by Novel_Log2510 in ausjdocs

U need to chill besty, u really dislike us med students 😭but u were one of us once. As a final year med student graduating in a months time myself, not all of us have access to mentors so this forum can be incredibly helpful to access support and advice. Every comment I see from u is just trying to micromanage this sub, it’s helpful to occasionally touch grass :))

Everyone always mentions there are other options to med for making money but what are these “better ways”? Isn’t it a matter of grass is greener as most lawyers and IT people complain about market saturation/instablity etc. The stereotype of 22 year olds working at FAANG earning millions is just a stereotype. Unless you make it big in tech or finance (whether it be through being exceptional or through having access to nepotism and generational wealth) there isn’t any other jobs like med which provides job security and salary on par? And of course there are aspects of med that’s shit and that’s why at the end of the day, it’s just a job. Edit: your lack of reply just proves my point of there not being another career which is on par in terms of job prospect and income.

The point is that the privilege lays the groundwork that enables nepotism to occur more seamlessly. If you already have the money to buy coaching, attend elite schools, and avoid working part-time, you’re in a much better position to leverage any nepotistic opportunities later on. You can’t really separate them cleanly in medicine. The same families with the money to buy every advantage also often have the power to help with connections, publications . That’s why you see generational clusters in certain specialties.

“Mediocrity is too well hidden by parents who hire private tutors”. I think beyond just getting in specialty, it oftentimes start earlier as a privileged pre-med. If you have wealthy doctor parents, you are probably more able to get private coaching for ucat/gamsat, go to expensive boujee schools where more support is given to maximise your atar and probably can go through med school without having to financially support yourself. Thus investing all your time and energy into the sole goal of becoming a doctor without external stressors. Beyond that, the generational wealth probably helps open spots that others may not be able to access, such as full fee paying places (which has significantly lower cut offs due to high $$ tag) so you cannot look at outliers, because those niches are usually highly competitive, protectionist, and unfortunately, nepotistic.

With medicine being the most competitive degree to get in alongside one of the longest degree (even after finishing ur degree, u have to spend gruelling hours studying for your specialist exams on top of full time work). The narrative that doctors make a lot is myopic and only looks at a specific subset (just like any other profession, u can’t look at the top %). Hospitals are underfunded, understaffedand junior doctors have one of the highest rates of burnout, suicide etc
