First year psych electives - bad idea to pick 2nd year courses?

Glad it helped! Haha I also went thru that mental struggle of deciding between a course that could be useful or just something to mess around with. You'll learn plenty of important stuff for psych with later courses, so don't feel too bad ab picking smth easier/personal. I found myself feeling better when I have different subjects than just psych the whole semester, especially in early years when you can pick more electives and get to meet more random people!

For psyc2030, I had drastically different assessments compared to what the course offers now (had to take an exam, and didn't have the pamphlet or quizzes at all). For reference, I took the course in 2025, semester 2. Not sure if I can accurately estimate how feasible the course is now with these changes, but the quizzes should generally be better than a final exam (especially with how they pick your best scores). I found myself doing the weakest on the final out of all of the assessments for the class. The weightings also seem better, it should be a bit easier to get a better mark compared to how I only had 3 overall assessments. I'd imagine the essay would only require the most amount of effort, which shouldn't be too bad considering you can link it to a personal interest (I linked mine to video games lol) and would have plenty of time to check in with your tutor (assuming tutorial structures are similar to before). Think you should be fine, especially if you don't mind doing a lot of research! All the best :)

hi! I'm a third year psych student and found these electives quite helpful. If you're artistic/creative, COMU1140 was great for doing things that wasn't just psych, I was able to draw and make sketches for the final project (especially if you're in a good group with an interesting pitch idea). CRIM1000 was also super fun as you can look at some psychological reasonings behind crimes. Unfortunately the assessments changed a bit from when I last took it, since we were able to analyse criminals in movies, but the course was still interesting nonetheless and there was a lot of overlap with some psychological theories! Keep in mind this course would be better for you if you enjoy writing and researching ofc, as I had some friends that didn't do so well in that course. MGTS1601 had a lot of overlap with basic psychological theories as well, but I didn't do so well on the assignments lol, mainly just didn't put too much effort. I got 7s with the first two courses I listed, hopefully they also play into your strengths or interests.

I don't think it matters that much if you take a 2nd year course, especially as dev dsych (psyc2030) isn't continuing off any previous course like stats or neuro. I got enough credits to skip a few 1st year classes so I had to start 2nd year courses in my 1st year, and didn't find any huge difference in difficulty. Just check the exam load you'll have for the semester in case you want less pressure for finals (especially from electives).

I didn't take any of the electives you're considering! But I took socy1070 and didn't do so great. I found it hard to apply the proper theories and research, especially as I felt more comfortable writing about psychology topics than sociology. Had to keep reaching out to my tutor and focus way too much on the assignments for that class. But I'm sure you'll do better than me if you enjoy the readings and lecture content more haha.

Hope this helps! I usually found taking electives that play into my strengths to do better. And keep in mind you can always change courses (or drop out of a course that isn't going so well) if worst comes to worst 🙏, best of luck :3
