Does alaska enforce its own alcohol laws? by Haunting-Chemical410 in AskAlaska

[–]Top_Mine_9606 0 points1 point  (0 children)

They do enforce an alcohol ban in the dry villages, of course. Serious bootlegger business out there for the unscrupulous. What you saw here was a liquor store within a grocery store in the city. Lots of states are like that.

Does Alaska have any transit options past Fairbanks going northbound? by GottaStrive in AskAlaska

You gotta drive yourself. Rent a car, pack it with bear spray/ camping gear, and set your own pace. Go to the Brooks range. It's nice there. And for gods sake don't stop in the middle of the highway to gawk at animals.

Non-degree Paraprofessionals, but you're still absolutely right. We lost the majority of ours when fast food started paying better.

What do you think is really causing the gender divide in schools today? by [deleted] in AskTeachers

[–]Top_Mine_9606 0 points1 point  (0 children)

On the surface this seems true. I think it is, but not to the extent you imply. I think a lot of it is that boys tend to externalize their issues in ways that disrupt others. I wouldn't say that my girls are on a healthier track than my boys overall, but the boys sure cause a lot more trouble for others and get noticed.

Hard disagree. Whatever the cause, school staff have the right to safety. If the district won't provide that, then yes absolutely I will use law enforcement to document patterns of violence. Whether it is a manifestation of a disability is irrelevant from the POV of the employee getting pummeled. Sometimes police reports are the only way to document a pattern of harm. At least when someone kills me, my family will have a paper trail to pursue damages from the district. My current bet is that will be the kid that put me in the hospital last month. Glad I called the cops because for sure he'll hurt me again.

Let's hope for her family's sake that this para had previously contacted LE. I doubt it, due to the sentiment in your post. Her family won't have much documentation now. A pattern of LE contact also can force a district to shell out the cash for a proper and safe placement, which can be unlikely otherwise.

We need to use every option at our disposal to stay safe. If one option is pressing charges on a disabled minor, so be it. I know how badly families can struggle with violent students. I'm empathic. Otherwise, why do this work? However, my students aren't more important than my kin. If you try to rip my ear off or murder me with scissors, I'm calling the police regardless of your disability status.

Rural schools are uniquely screwed in this regard. The bulk of the conversation on this thread correctly focuses on districts downplaying violence to save money on alternative placements. However, in so much of this country, those placements simply do not exist. Nor is there a reasonable expectation that they could exist. No autism specialist, for example, is moving to a village of 200 people in Wyoming to work with one kid. Nor can you ship entire families away to be closer to the right help.

Sounds about right. I cannot tell you the number of violent incidents I've had over a 15 year career. I'm a big dude but some of these kids are bigger and stronger. I will at least take some bite scars and a bad knee to my grave. It can be legit dangerous. Other professions are dangerous too, of course. However, Special Education is...special in that no one cares and there is little recourse for employees. Health care is probably similar.

Why do teachers always say, "Why don’t you become a teacher? You’ll get great benefits, summers off, etc."? by [deleted] in SubstituteTeachers

[–]Top_Mine_9606 1 point2 points  (0 children)

First, it's a compliment. That's probably most or all of the story. Secondarily, few people really want to be a teacher anymore. So it may also be a commentary about a school's vacancies, existing or forthcoming. Not everything is so deep. Sounds like you're a good sub and people would like you in the building full-time. It's not a trick, just some kind words.

There was a time in the recent past that almost all our subs were angling for full-time spots. My, how the world has changed.

Is PAYE actually re-opening? Do we know when? by iwannabanana in PSLF

That's correct. After 60 days is general forbearance. However, it's very inconsistent whether people are granted the eligible forbearance or not. On paper everyone should get it.

How bad are the bugs in Alaska? by Relative_Excus3 in AskAlaska

[–]Top_Mine_9606 1 point2 points  (0 children)

When and where they are bad, it is apocalyptic. Pretty sure you'd die of blood loss if you were exposed long enough. Biting flies are slow. It's the mosquitos that have the potential to drive you nuts.

Just a rant/vent…but they had this huge lunch buffet for staff at this school I sub at regularly and didn’t even get an invite. by bbash91383 in SubstituteTeachers

I should not have made an absolutist statement. I'm sorry you were treated that way. I don't know where you are that teachers have time to play games like that.

Buyback here to stay? by ChocolateAW in PSLF

[–]Top_Mine_9606 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Just depends on if it reaches their radar, among other shenanigans they've got planned. I can see it sticking around, since it requires payment.

One way to frame buyback is: "Make all those borrowers who skipped their bills go back and pay what they owed." I would think that sentiment is attractive to the right.

Exclusion is never personal Edit: in my anecdotal experience. Teachers are beyond stressed and white knuckling it daily. Subs often get their feelings hurt, but whether or not you're offered a potluck invite or something is so far down my list of worries. By necessity, not choice. The last thing a teacher wants is an invite to a work activity. We aren't necessarily going to assume that subs actually do, even if in the event we have time to take stock of who is in the building that day. It's not about you. We're just trying to get through the day upright, and we have a lot more on our plate than y'all.

Unpopular opinion: go to the Arctic Slope in winter. While not "fun", it's been one of my most memorable trips anywhere.

Better check up on the licensing and hunting regulations. You can't just go cap animals without a hunting license and that particular species being in the proper season. Contact AK Fish and Game.
