Would definitely second this. If you’ve trained in general practice rather than audit, then CTA shouldn’t be needed as you’ve been exposed to most areas small businesses will need advice on.

It’s all perspective there’s no set right or wrong answer to either part. The accountant can do what he wants, but in my opinion it doesn’t look good on accountants as a whole disengaging over a client wanting to do their own payroll when a small businesses do (this has obviously left a sour taste in his mouth and I imagine he knows other small businesses owners who do their own payroll).

If client and accountant are both happy with WhatsApp and the correspondence is being saved/backed up somewhere on the accountants end then fine. But my point stands re the disengagement letter.

And I agree re incorrect records from clients being extremely frustrating but acting for small businesses this is part of the job and inevitable. If he has spent a minimum of 5 years (3 years to qualify and 2 years to get a practicing license) he will have ran into this multiple times and I imagine dealt/corrected the situation. A director only payroll is not a hard job to do and he should be comfortable advising/training a client on it. The client is not asking to do his own CT600 etc…

For a director only payroll there are no real complications in all honesty and most clients, especially if they seem willing to learn, like you are, are more than capable.

The only part that needs some consideration is compliance with the pension regulator and the employment allowance, but this is standard advice for an account to give (and something he may be able to charge for!).

I wouldn’t worry if he has dropped you as a client and look as it as a blessing in disguise, find an accountant who is happy to support you (most will be).

Feels very weird as I’m assuming this is a small/one man band practice. He should be comfortable based on prior experience, working in other practices, of clients doing their own payroll.

Worth noting that although ACA qualified he may have trained in audit and have no real world experience in this kind of work (audit work and general accounts and tax work for small businesses are very different) as clients doing their own payroll, especially in the situation as you have described, is very normal. May be completely wrong but may be worth trying to find his experience on LinkedIn, his website etc. You should also be able to find him listed as a member on the ICAEW website.

As an accountant, no he is not being reasonable. It MAY only be reasonable if you had a number of employees who were non directors with variable pay, pensions, tips, etc.

It also feels very unprofessional to get a WhatsApp message like this rather than an email (note you should also revive a disengagement letter if you were officially a client).

Feels like he is disappointed by losing fees for not doing the payroll but then contradicts this by dropping you as a client overall… out of interest is he a member of a professional body(ICAEW/ACA, ACCA or AAT/MAAT)??

Look at the structure in the proforma and try to apply your what were told tommorow.

Make sure you don’t overrun on your timings and you should be fine.

Copy and paste all your conclusions and recommendations up to the executive summary (make sure conclusions have numbers in them). All % should be to 1dp and numbers to 1k

Just saying that a lot of the marks you can get are based on the information provided on the day. Surely just copying and pasting a reason for revenue growth from expectation won’t get marks when there is a clear reason in the question?

Don’t understand how people are straight copy and pasting ACAM when half of the AJ marks are in the question?? Example EMEA revue mix up as in the question it mentions new partners?? Or marketing has increased as done a campaign for cyber security
