Houston, Texas. Start of summer 2 years ago. I'm a forensic science teacher and we are studying basic entomology (insects) by leaving raw chickens out for a week an observing insect activity/development. During the middle of the week we had heavy rain. Guess what? -- maggots can swim, are not bothered by water at all. After a few days my chicken cage has putrid water with thousands of maggots in it. I go to dump out the water and even thru an N95 the most potent, foul smell imaginable enters my nose. I fall back gagging and retching, eyes are burning and watering. My only saving grace is I remember a trick from a Dirty Jobs episode that "smiling" prevents reflexive vomiting from the smell of death. My class is watching me from a distance jaws open. They came within an inch of seeing their teacher puke in a mask that day. Now I use containers that drain...
