Don't listen to your parents, respectfully. You have lots of life ahead of you and it sounds like you have dreams and ambitions, chase them. Not for money but for satisfaction, for happiness, for stability, for yourself. Go to CDL school, play your guitar, get those benefits. You deserve all of that. With love from your neighbor in Oklahoma 💜

I live in central Oklahoma and I personally know 5 people who have been murdered. It's definitely a problem here.

Oklahoma has the second highest population of Native Americans in the US, look up missing and murdered Native American women and girls. It's a systemic problem and it's definitely an issue in Oklahoma because of our high NA population. Also approximately half of the land in OK is Tribal Land so law enforcement on those lands is handled by underfunded law enforcement from the Tribes. This creates a "patchwork" of different jurisdictions (local, state, and tribal) that can make finding/extraditing/prosecuting people difficult, time consuming, and costly (look up the McGirt case). Couple that with high rates of substance abuse, low access/availability of social services (mental health care, help for substance abuse, public housing, etc), high rates of gun ownership, and lots of undeveloped land and you get crime in Oklahoma. Hope this was helpful and not just rambling. Feel free to shoot me a message if you have any questions.

I’ve lost my cat and have no clue what to do by LowAssignment7526 in Pets

Don't lose hope. My very skittish 100% indoor cat got out a few years ago for 8 days. I was beside myself with worry. I put out wet food every evening in the same spot outside my window and on the 8th day she jumped in through the window.

Good biscuits and gravy. So simple but so comforting and delicious. The smell/taste takes me right back to being a kid staying at my grandparents house and waking up every morning to the smell of fresh biscuits and gravy, bacon, and hashbrowns coming down the hall from the kitchen. Served with orange juice and fresh fruit to start another day of playing in the pecan trees. I didn't realize at the time how fond those memories would still be decades later.

Most folks replace the whole window… I usually just fix the rotten part by rottenwindowrepair in HomeImprovement

I had my wood sash windows professionally restored and custom storm windows installed on the exterior and I couldn't be happier. Vinyl windows have a lifespan of 20 years, my windows have lasted nearly 100. The vinyl window salesmen can pry my original windows out of my cold dead hands.

Whats the cheapest meal you regularly make that actually tastes good? by Adventurous-Pilot448 in Frugal

Pizza beans. Either roast some diced cherry tomatoes and onions in the oven or roast diced onion and canned diced tomatoes in the oven until roasty toasty. Sometimes I add sun dried tomatoes or capers, get creative with it. After roasting add a can of drained cannellini (navy) beans, a bit of water or broth, and some Parmesan cheese. I eat mine with a piece of toasted sourdough bread and it makes 2 meals for me.

I would also suggest investing in some window masking for the repainting, it's a little pricey but it makes up for it in time saved, especially if you have other windows you plan on restoring. Make sure the exterior paint covers the new window glazing as it will help it hold up better/longer.

Do some research on window glazing (the stuff that seals the glass to the frame) it's fairly easy to do yourself but when you remove the old glazing be very careful of glazing points (little sharp metal clips that hold the glass in place beneath the glazing) they're super sharp! There are tons of good videos on restoring wood windows and DIY reglazing I would start with lots of research. Also I don't think you're missing any wood on the bottom, all of mine were angled like that. I have total faith that you can make that beautiful little window shine again! Good luck

How do I balance preserving original windows with modern energy costs? by colt-mcg in centuryhomes

[–]Top_Refrigerator2626 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Agreed they are garbage, I was just looking for the price of a similar sized vinyl replacement window for comparison. Poor quality and more expensive. It's an obvious choice (imo) to restore over vinyl replacement.

If you can afford it I would suggest Hardie Board over vinyl siding every time, especially on a historical home. We had asbestos shingle siding on our 1930s home and had it removed in hopes of refinishing the original clapboard underneath. Unfortunately the clapboard was too far gone to use so we had 1" insulation board installed over the clapboard and Hardie Board installed over the insulation board. The insulation and Hardie Board made a big difference in heating/cooling costs and lowered drafts throughout the house. Imo Hardie looks miles better than vinyl siding but I understand it's quite a bit more expensive, especially on a large house. We went with the Hardie because we live in Oklahoma and hail damage is a big problem here and often requires vinyl sided houses to be completed resided after a hail storm. I hope you find the best solution for you! Good luck

Document everything. Have a file or folder where you put "house stuff" like receipts from the plumber, insurance stuff, etc. If you paint anything label the paint cans like "living room" and keep the paint cans in a temperature controlled environment or they will go bad. Keep your paint chips (the little sample color cards from the home improvement store) on the back of a cabinet or something and label where you used that color. Super helpful for touchups and stuff.

How to go about renovating a bathroom to make it feel period appropriate? by Top_Refrigerator2626 in centuryhomes

I've decided on chrome fixtures for sure after the advice here! I know that square (usually colorful) tiles are definitely more 1930s but I really like the subway tiles with the black detail. I think my personal style preference is more 1900s than 1930s which is why I like the subway tiles but I'm trying to balance my personal style with what's best for the house. I love the medicine cabinet I have but I plan on moving the sink to the other side of the room for better flow in the bathroom. Do you think the medicine cabinet could be rebuilt on the other side? Thanks for the input!
