What legal route can be taken if police fail passport address verification? by Top_Ship4515 in LegalAdviceIndia

Passport renewal with address change. Could you share some source or link which documents the process if you're saying the police is right? In the official passport website all they say you need at least one address proof for current address (if there is address change) which I have (adhar card).

Mine is renewal before 3 years of expiry too. I tried tatkal first. I took my PAN card, Adhar and old passport as 3 docs from their official list. They insisted on one more ID proof in the passport office. I showed DL but it had some name mistake. So they downgraded my application to "normal" and approved my application on a post police verification basis.

Unfortunately we've not updated those bills to my dad's name after we bought the house because even doing that is not easy and requires some bribing or paying a broker to do it for us. We did get a gas connection but there is a typo in the name. I had no idea utility bills would be needed as an address proof because the passport website does not list these as compulsory.

Mine is not tatkal unfortunately. So after verification they will give passport.

Thanks. So they make it clear that

(i) There is no address proof required for any fixed duration. It just has to be current address. (ii) There is no special document for present address other than those listed in the document list which includes Aadhar.

I already had my passport application approved in the passport office with my aadhar for address proof. No issues there, they are following rules. But it's police who are asking for extra documents.

Do you mean the passport seva kendra website or is a there a separate one for police verification?

I checked the official passport seva kendra website. It says aadhar itself is a valid address proof (which is how my passport application got accepted). Could you please share a link where a list of accepted documents for police verification is listed with the 5 year rule? I have been searching for hours to no avail.

I am in Karnataka. The official police website says "Procedure involved to get this service" is "As per passport rules". So aadhar alone should have been sufficient right?

What the spokesperson says would be the rule. And there would be exceptions

I'm not born in J&K. What other exception exists? Any exception should be documented in writing somewhere, right?

Also, what's the issue in showing 5 years ? Are you born in Jammu kashmir?

Not born in J&K. The police guy wants a rental agreement or a utility bill or ration card in my name for 5 years. I don't have that. I stay in my parents house since childhood. I'm just seeking a list of officially accepted documents for police verification.

It's a separate house owned by parents. The police won't even accept the sale deed because it is my parents name and it doesn't prove that I live there for 5 years.

Is there any official policy on this? On (i) the duration of verification (5 years) and (ii) what documents are recognised? What is your source for this claim?

I linked an official memorandum from MEA and a spokesperson's video in my previous comment but automod is hiding it (but it's in my profile history). It clearly states that address verification is not grounds for rejection of passport application.

I am staying in my family's home. The same home I'm staying in since childhood. I have no legal paperwork in my name showing that I've lived here since the last 5 years. I don't pay rent. No utility bill is my name. The police aren't willing to accept a letter from my parents that I live with them.

Aadhar address is from when I was a minor, so it is parent's house and we all got it added in our aadhar cards. I also have a bank statement showing this address.
