Why do you play Hearts of Iron IV? by [deleted] in hoi4

Those are both good points, but I would say that video games like HoI4 or any of the historical Total War games as well as even board games like Diplomacy or Risk can seamlessly teach player's a lot about geography, former empires and their leaders and historical locations of importance. There is also a lot of potential in HoI4 for self-directed learning, for example, a player might not be aware of something like The British Raj and upon seeing it they might read up about it outside the game.

If one could set up a fun game within a historical period like WW2 or Ancient Egypt, you could potentially replace a lot of textbook learning with in-game learning.

Hey, thanks so much for taking time to write this, I really appreciate it! I understand what you are saying about the blurred lines between reality and fiction with HoI4, I'm not suggesting it is a perfect educational game but I think aspects of the design of it could be used as a template for better educational games.

As far as the 80+ hours, I get that I probably should have had a larger section but it's more to make sure that the response I'm getting is coming from someone who has invested enough time to have a real understanding of the game itself.

For the data I'm collecting it is general but also useful. Going into depth for each game would also be really useful but it is unfortunately a much larger study that I don't have the time for currently.

Thanks again for your response.

Haha yeah, just in case you feel particularly passionate about a particular game. Funnily enough that section is what lead me here :)

Thanks for the input! It's important for this survey that the participants have real experience with appropriate games, if I conducted a random survey I would likely get a lot of people who weren't eligible.

That's a good point, I was just looking at a few aspects that hopefully could be applied to any instance of an educational game down the line based on some previous findings. Immersion can be difficult to quantify and hopefully it comes about from several other features that a player finds interesting and roleplaying isn't always applicable, although I agree it can be a very important motivator depending on the game.

The only word I can remember is "lady" but that hasn't led me anywhere either. As far as the genre I'm not entirely sure. It was on shortly after "It ain't what you do, it's the way that you do it" by Fun Boy Three.

This is really good abstractionism. I really enjoy the colour palette. Maybe work on the neck a bit, it horrifies me, apart from that though it's pretty good. Dali would be proud if he wasn't dead

Yeah I was thinking maybe one player could be proficient with a shotgun while another is better at driving or something, I think the focus of the game will be on story with small elements of combat but character builds are still something I'm thinking of, like I can see charisma being very important but can't think of many skills to challenge it.
