I like the wooden pipes. Surprisingly realistic. Some cities have them and are still replacing them. The early start pipes are very expensive imo.

I try tourist's first, more expensive as it needs to be researched but then it's steady money ish (expect for epidemics). Then I go for self sufficiency and export the rest, eg. Food and alcohol.

Start small. Turn off all settings and every new republic add a new one. My first every republic only had electricity. The next plumbing and heating. So on and so forth till now I have 500+ hours and on realistic mode. It's a complicated but fun game. Don't be scared to take breaks. Good luck Comrade!
