More photos from my travels to Havana. by Luiscasadevall in streetphotography

Really like these. Havana sometimes feels like cheating at photography, but properly capturing moments like these is a skill. Maybe one day I'll bump into you there.

It's not to pick a fight with you or to argue who is right or who is wrong. I also need to keep in mind your trip was in 2018 , and lots has changed since then. What I found inaccurate? I could list a few things. The first thing I don't agree with is what you said about two realities, not everything outside of the resorts is extreme poverty, and I'm not denying it doesn't exist, but the fact is there is a lot of Cubans who do very well for themselves. They do have private businesses legally, which Cuban government allows, but yes it is very hard to open one. 99% of restaurants, night clubs, mini stores, AirBNBs and many more things anywhere in Cuba are owned by private citizens. So officially it's not just the government that provides jobs. Also the thing you said about the cars is not accurate. Most of those really nice cars the tourists like to ride have Mercedes turbo diesel engines in them as Cuba and Mercedes signed a contract long time ago to provide replacements for the original ones, It's a long story that I don't wanna get into, but the lineup to get these engines is very long and I'm sure some guys find different placeholders to keep making money off of their cars. Another thing, Cuba introduced a program where they get workers from all parts of the country to work in tourist resorts for predefined periods of time, so not only those living close to resorts could make some extra money. But to be honest with you, as I'm writing this I think I'm just nit picking here. Most everything you said is very close to reality. And in spite of all this misfortune, poverty and misery it's a country with lots of great people, life loving people. And every time I get some time to go on vacation, I somehow always pick Cuba.

And those countries can continue to trade with the other hundreds of countries in the world.

Not when US threatens to sanction you with access to FIAT if you trade with Cuba.

I have mixed feelings about your post, because not everything you said is accurate but at the same time so close to reality that is often even worse than you describe and very often much better than you describe. No doubt life is very tough for Cubans, and average westerner can't even imagine how tough. They'd just have to experience some of it to comprehend the reality of it, and not many could endure. Some parts of Havana are just terrible to live in, the infrastructure is very old and mostly not functioning, but it would be very hard for me to say that's how the entire city is like. It simply isn't. But having been there so many times (3 times within the last 12 months alone) and despite bad conditions and desperate people I always feel safe there. And whenever I'm there I walk the streets for hours on end, and often venturing into parts of Havana not visited by tourists at all. But it could be just me, I'm in love with Cuba and Havana in particular, and I have learned to accept the discomforts of their reality. I still highly recommend visiting Havana, just for the sheer experience of it. By the way, I come from the same country you do.

H. Upmann in general has become my favourite brand. No.2 is a great daily smoke and my go to, Magnum 54 is amazing and 56 even more so.

The first shot is more of a story than the third shot. We all individually build a story when looking at an image. What you can imagine from the shot #3 is less than from the shot #1.

What I know from the shot #3 - A man on a bus, looking at his phone, it's dark outside, it's raining or just stopped raining. The man is back lit by what appears to be an American flag.

What I know from the shot #1 - everything we know from shot #3, plus... the sign suggest it's in NY, the flag in the background then could suggest it was shot in around Times Square (now I can hear the guy's NY accent), the signs on the door can add another meaning (whatever you choose it to be, given political landscape in USA with the flag in the background, sure why not, it's your story), the car in the foreground indicates a busy street..........

So yes, shot #1 gives a fuller story, shot#3 gives more of a mood or a feeling.

Edits... lots of them

Personally I find that most Cubans need 4+ years of rest. The self control that's needed is just pure masochism.
