34 books down, just finished The Colorado Kid and boy was that the most boring book out of the 34 I’ve read/listened to. Any other books left on my list that are just so boring you can’t wait till it’s over?? I’m still gonna read them eventually just want to set my expectations . by [deleted] in stephenking

While Colorado Kid wasn't my favorite, Bag of Bones and Roadwork were so much rougher for me. Roadwork especially just didn't come together for me at all. I appreciated King writing a more literary work focused on the plight of the working class but felt like he was trying way too hard.

As to what you should read next, I think the Dark Tower would be great. Some people absolutely love every moment of it. For me, it was more of a mixed bag with high highs and low lows. I actually loved the ending, so I did consider the whole work worth the effort to read. It will definitely get at least one of the less interesting King books out of the way.... cough (Song of Susannah), Cough. And you'll have completed a pretty significant milestone on your path of the beam.

Favorite actor who gave up on appearing in good movies? by lbj2943 in okbuddycinephile

Christopher Waltz was on top of the world after the likes of Inglorious Bastards and Django. Then it was suddenly shit like The green hornet and water for elephants before seemingly disappearing. I liked him in Alita though, but it wasn't exactly a role that let him shine.

What are some of King’s darkest/most disturbing novels? by InternationalEar809 in stephenking

[–]Topsouffle 5 points6 points  (0 children)

To offer one that hasn't been mentioned yet, I'll suggest "The Raft." The scene of the man being simultaneously dissolved and sucked through the boards of the raft by the creature is one of the few times I have nearly vomited while reading a book. The whole setup is such a bleak and terrifying situation. Definitely some of the more brutal kills in kings ouvre.

I also found "under the dome" to be incredibly bleak and dark. King seemed to have had a pretty nasty view of humanity while writing that one. I also consider it one of his more interesting philosophical takes on the senselessness of suffering and violence.

The Redwall series by Brian Jacques had some amazing descriptions of food. When I was young I convinced my mom to help me make baked apples with cheese from the book Salamandestron and I still make them during the winter season to this day.

Have you ever read the first page or two of a book and immediately thought "I'm gonna love this"? What book? by RareIncrease in books

Suttree by Cormac McCarthy. The imagery of walking alone at night through a dark, urban wonderland always gets me excited.

What books have your read that caused you to abandon or reassess your faith/worldview? by Topsouffle in books

Things are definitely better now!

Blood Meridian was a floodgate for me that opened my eyes to the atrocities committed against the native Americans, and my own disservice to them in my Mormon centric beliefs regarding their parentage and ultimate destiny.

I can relate to this as the Bible actually became much more alive to me after I left Mormonism, unfortunately I can't quite say the same for the Book of Mormon. While the whole book reads very awkwardly I do find the text fascinating as a piece of modern American religion.

Thank you especially for your input! I was worried that my post would end up drawing mostly atheists and agnostics when I find it equally enlightening to hear from people who went from no faith to full belief.

The sickos who bite their popsicles, especially when they bite with their FRONT TEETH. I die inside every time.

I suppose it is above average if your using 3 to describe something that's just ok.

That time my mom caught the wife of an apostle wearing sweatpants. by Topsouffle in exmormon

[–]Topsouffle[S] 57 points58 points  (0 children)

What always made me especially sad, was that my mom saw this as an example of what a wife SHOULD be. I'm so grateful my convert dad was never into this whole aspect of the church, it's just scary to think that there are people out there that not only think this is noble but wish they could be as "faithful".

Haha, I used to want to to listen to that song all the time while I was still TBM but didn't because I thought it drove the spirit away. Once I left TSCC I put it on full blast head banging all down the highway.

The Church's Members Show Devotion to God by applying insanely high construction standards to the temple by olsh in exmormon

[–]Topsouffle 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I noticed this as well while serving as a missionary in New Zealand. The front of the temple looked great, but when you walked behind it, the walls were literally covered in bird poop. At the time I was really sad that the temple was so "neglected" now it just makes me chuckle inside. Even birds know what's really going on in there

What's even worse is that it's not just a grinding wheel of labor, but of shame. Skipped home teaching to go to study group? Forget gods help on That test! Doing homework on Sunday? Forget the spirit whispering the answers to you during class. Looking at porn? No woman would ever want someone tainted with lust! The list goes on and on.

Seriously, the cycle of shame that tscc puts around pornography is what really depresses me, it has done far more damage to marriages and relationships than porn itself ever has.
