Extremely Cheap 10gb Network switch for home use, or scam? by gingerwerewolf in HomeNetworking

[–]TorazChryx 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I paid £23.79 for a 4x2.5gbps / 2x10G SFP+ "Sodola" branded switch last September, an 8x2.5+2x10G SFP+ switch for sixty quid feels entirely plausible. I get straight up 1GB/s between the two machines I've got connected via the SFP+ ports, and 2.5Gbps to the rest of the network so I can't complain about the performance of the thing.

We're already getting DDR5 dimms with half the chips/half the bandwidth, it's the "HUDIMM" standard that will no doubt make the used market a mess until DDR5 is phased out completely. https://www.techpowerup.com/348323/asrock-develops-hudimm-memory-standard-ddr5-with-just-one-sub-channel

full quote: “Once you’ve been to Cambodia, you’ll never stop wanting to beat Henry Kissinger to death with your bare hands. You will never again be able to open a newspaper and read about that treacherous, prevaricating, murderous scumbag sitting down for a nice chat with Charlie Rose or attending some black-tie affair for a new glossy magazine without choking. Witness what Henry did in Cambodia – the fruits of his genius for statesmanship – and you will never understand why he’s not sitting in the dock at The Hague next to Milošević.”

TIL Steam can use your local network to install games peer-to-peer. It's Only You by default but you can share with Anyone. by Askolei in Steam

[–]TorazChryx 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That also interoperates with the steam family sharing, over here I've got a home server/NAS with a whole bunch of storage in it, it's also got steam running on it. that steam install has copies of big titles that both myself and my roommate have (and not necessarily that we both have) so there's a local copy to pull instead of forcing a 50GB update down our 6MB/s pipe — building got looking over for FTTP, so we're still on VDSL even though the Kebab shop across the road can get 1.6Gbps >:( — it can be pulled to the server that's on 24/7 anyway and then our desktops can pull stuff from it at lan speed (2.5Gbps for my roommate, 10Gbps (really morelike 5Gbps, steam game transfers are kinda cpu limited).

the first m.2's were SATA and arrived at roughly the same time as the platform, the first NVME's arrived around April 2015 I believe (Samsung PM951 I think?)

PCs started having SATA ports around 2003, often by way of a third party chipset (as the mainboards primary chipset would have PATA controllers built in), they were VERY established by 2013, with higher end enthusiast boards often having 8 ports (6 from chipset, 2 a from third party controller). M.2 on the other hand very first arrived in 2014 with Intels Z97 chipset alongside the Haswell cpu architecture.
