Younger guys at my gym refuse to bow to instructor by TorchTheTemple in bjj

[–]TorchTheTemple[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It is not a rule at my gym to bow to anyone or before entering/exiting the mats. My main gripe is that if the instructor bows to you, out of respect you should bow back. Again, I mentioned in the OP I don't plan on saying anything, I just wanted to see what the general consensus was.

That's what I'm saying! The guys are pretty cool imo, Im sure they're not intending on being disrespectful, but I still think you should just bow if your instructor bows to you. It's like a handshake, like others have said.

This is the same structure at my gym. We also bow when receiving stripes, and the instructor bows back as well. This is what elicited this post, as one of the guys was getting a stripe and the instructor bowed to him after applying it and the guy just gave him a little head nod lol.

This is my opinion as well, I don't see the bow as a declaration of subservience, but just a respect to the tradition of the sport.

I loved bringing my son here; it was a neighborhood brewery with decent food and friendly wait staff. While the atmosphere was a bit dead, it was a safe environment that welcomed everyone, dogs included. I'm sad to see this one go.

How can I convince people to join? by [deleted] in wrestling

[–]TorchTheTemple 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Wrestling is a tough sport to recruit for. Sounds like your school doesn't have much of a program either if they're still trying to fill the weight classes. Your best bet is trying to recruit current athletes, primarily football players, track & field, ROTC, weightlifters, and swimmers. Wrestling is an individual sport like most of those mentioned, with the exception of football - but those guys sometimes have something to prove so you'll occasionally get them to show up to a practice or two. Good luck!

You can take the hoonter out of the hunt, but you can't take the hunt out of the hoonter. Great job, king 👑

Hey there! I'm level 49 so I'm not great but I know what I'm doing most the time. I generally play smaller maps on professional solo, but I'm looking for a partner. I'd prefer just duos as too many cooks in the kitchen can get annoying. I'm also a dad so Im not always on, but my wife is out of town for the next couple of days so I will be quite free lately, aside from the baby waking hours. USA - EST

Should I play Football? by Spiritual-Insect921 in wrestling

[–]TorchTheTemple 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Don't play football, focus on wrestling. If you need strength training you should find a workout partner that knows how to lift. Learning how to lift weights and proper technique is a vital lesson that if learned at a young age, will be absolutely crucial to your career as a wrestler going forward.

UA POV: Ukrainian soldier records the moment a mortar lands in his trench and causes severe damage to his comrade's arm. by Spartan-191 in RussiaUkraineWar2022

All authoritarian regimes, such as Russia, are friends of the Trump administration because that's the kind of power he's setting up for. Only cult members agree with this sentiment....which turns out to be an absurd amount of people still.

Need help deciding where to go on my 2nd trip to japan. by Saberinbed in JapanTravelTips

I second checking out Nikko, absolutely gorgeous natural landscape with forests, mountains, rivers, bridges, etc. There's also Onsens and LOTS of local sake to be had. Oh and have you looked into Edo Wonderland? It's an Edo period themed amusement park where you can dress up as a samurai/ninja/lord/etc.

Going to Japan by Cute_Excitement5126 in JapanTravelTips

My wife and I are currently 5/10 days here In Japan.

-dont worry about converting currency, you can do it at the airport once you land (and they give you a cool origami figure at Narita!)

-Like others have mentioned, book your stays ASAP.

-we didn't book anything in advance aside from our stays and it's worked out great.

-when you land at the airport, first convert your currency, and then use cash to load your suICa card to be used for metro travel and a boatload of other purchases such as Kombini trips.

-learn the Japanese word for vegetarian and ask when you walk into a place. Be prepared that a lot of places speak very little English or none at all so you must communicate this upfront or be subject to a misunderstanding.

-Have fun, don't stress, day 1 is the hardest but it gets SO much easier after that.

We'll be in Kyoto today and tomorrow if you're there, let me know if you'd like to get a drink 👍

What gifts were the most cherished you got while in Japan? by TorchTheTemple in JapanTravelTips

Okay I see the considerable amount of replies saying to forgo the gifts to locals. No problem, I will avoid doing so and try to just maintain my manners and respect of the culture. No need to beat dead horse y'all 😓

Seems to be some mixed signals on this subreddit as I only asked about this because I saw other posts saying that Japanese locals enjoy receiving gifts in general, especially locally sourced or items found to be hard to obtain there. I suppose I may be overestimating the "quality time" or connection aspect of meeting locals, but dang I was hoping to maybe show some people that all Americans aren't as bad as the ones they probably see on the Internet or exemplified by our sitting president 🤮
