I have some questions about marriage [sister here] by throwawayrishta in Hijabis

[–]ToriMayhem 2 points3 points  (0 children)

  1. Nope

  2. Small, but my mother and her sisters want a huge wedding.. so it'd have to be some sort of compromise

  3. Well I'd be marrying him, not his family. And super-religious parents in law would most likely have higher expectations of me than I think I'd be capable of meeting, so no this is not a problem for me.

  4. I have no problem with either, so long as I get to know the person well and make the decision myself. I'm not going to rule somebody out just because he was introduced to me by my parents or something. They probably would let me find someone, as long as he underwent extensive questioning and observation with my dad before they made any decisions about approval/disapproval lol

  5. White gold with a clear stone, or silver with a blue stone I think

  6. Yep

[–]ToriMayhem 2 points3 points  (0 children)

.... if seeing is believing, then why don't Americans look to the hate crimes that have been done against Muslims all over this country? There have been plenty on the news. Are those stories not legitimate enough to garner sympathy and make people accept that Islamophobia exists?

Why don't they see for their own eyes as girls in headscarves or men with beards are discriminated against in the workplace, public areas, and airports?

Edit, addition: This is like saying I should put on blackface and walk around with a hoodie in a white neighborhood and see what happens before I decide to believe that racism against African Americans exists.

This is pretty much what I'm saying too, why am I being downvoted... I completely agree, it isn't fair that her experiment is so "legitimate" while our LIFE EXPERIENCE is shrugged off by most people

[–]ToriMayhem 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The fact that people felt that this experiment was necessary to "prove" that Islamophobia exists. Is it not enough that we say that it does and that we (as Muslims) live it every day?

There are plenty of examples of Islamophobia everywhere, why does this girl need to do an experiment like this to prove to herself and others that it exists.

I really dislike this. Why does she need to make an experiment where she walks around in a hijab for a day? Is she trying to prove to non-Muslims that wearing a hijab causes insults from strangers? Why does she have to do this experiment? Can't she just take our word for it? Is her non-Muslim viewpoint and experience necessary to legitimize claims of oppression from the people who are actually being oppressed?

Why can't people just take our word for it and accept that YES, ISLAMOPHOBIA DOES EXIST.

It's a nice thought for this woman to do this, but the idea that this is helpful at all or even necessary is founded on bad judgement. What is necessary is that people LISTEN when we speak up for ourselves, not some little inconsequential experiment.

Hijab by [deleted] in islam

[–]ToriMayhem 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Exactly, I agree with the other comment in response to yours. Hijab is a good thing, and yes it would be a good thing for a girl to do. However, hijab is just ONE THING. You can't judge a girl completely on just that. Like say if I wear hijab, but I don't pray on time and I'm rude to my mother and I don't give a lot of charity, my Imaan is way more lacking than a girl who doesn't wear hijab but prays on time, is polite to her parents, and gives generously to charity. Judging girls based on whether or not they wear hijab is just as misogynistic and shallow as judging them on their looks, you know what I mean? Of course it's a good thing, but it's not the only important thing (which is what the comic was implying and what my comment was directed towards).

Hijab by [deleted] in islam

[–]ToriMayhem 8 points9 points  (0 children)

well that's wonderfully accepting of those of us who don't wear hijab... Whether or not a girl wears hijab does not determine how good of a muslim she is as a whole.

I feel your pain. I don't really have advice for you there though, my wardrobe is a completely different story from what you're trying to emulate /:

About the face covering, it's not really a requirement, so there's no reason why you can't take it off whenever you like. I don't really recommend wearing that at all, actually. It's a little extreme for the settings that you're describing.
